I use my jello mold oven on all of our trips and it works great. I usually only trip with one other person so it's a small setup--a 7.5" ring with a pie plate cover.

The pie plate is pretty bent up and doesn't stay in place well. I am going to switch to using one of my small camp fry pans as the lid as they nest with my cooking gear and will pack better.

My question is this: Do I want air space above the jello mold or not? The edges of my smallest fry pan line up perfectly with the edges of the jello mold, creating two inches or so of air space above the jello mold. The larger fry pan will sit flush on the outer edge of the jello mold with essentially no air space above the mold. Hope this description makes sense!

Wondering if any of you have tried both methods to see if it makes a difference?

I've had good success with my loose-fitting pie pan lid but I would like just a little better baking on the top so I think either of the two fry pans will be better. Just wondering which will be best. Maybe I'll have to try a bake-off and report my results here!...

Thanks everyone!

I think you have to have clearance above the center cone for heat to build up over entire top of jmo and retaint it. Also room for food to rise unimpeded.

I have used it both ways, with space and without. I like the air space for a little more heat build up.
