Sorry, too many of the thread titles are similar.

Quick background. I've never been to the BWCA. Last October (2012) I was creamed in a construction accident and left with a broken back, both shins shattered, 4 broken ribs and some severe bruising of the pancreas and liver. I spent a month in the ICU, 3 months in a wheelchair, 3 months learning to walk again, and I'm ready to do every last thing I always wanted to do. One recent snag in all my planning though, I broke both of the rods holding my spine together and need another operation which is going to happen soon, as in 2 weeks.(I hope) So estimating recovery times, my original plan for some time in June is still realistic. My intention is the Lizz entry and 4-5 days either doing a short loop or maybe basing on Gaskin or somewhere thereabout. So, I don't have too many questions since most get answered in other threads but there are a couple. Plus if I got a thread going I can come back and ask more later. Anyways.........

1. How far on an easy day can you travel? For obvious reasons I don't want to plan a specific site and discover at the last paddle that I can't get there before midnight.

2. What do you guys/gals use for tackle boxes? And how much stuff do you bring? I like to fish but it's not the A number one objective. But I'd probably fish every day.

3.Are any of you "Paleo Diet" people? I have plenty of ideas for food but having more ideas is always good.

That be it for now but I'm sure I'll have more later.

Wow! Your fortitude is breathtaking!

The Lizz area is one of my faves.

You asked, "How far on an easy day can you travel? For obvious reasons I don't want to plan a specific site and discover at the last paddle that I can't get there before midnight."

I went in EP47 this past spring with Serenity Seeker. We are women and double portaged so I would say that we were about average as far as speed and endurance are concerned.

We left Rockwood's beach around 8:30 am and made it to the first campsite on the East end of Gaskin by early afternoon (Poplar to Lizz to Caribou to Horseshoe to Gaskin). We probably had more than enough time to make it to Winchell but we were out of gas so we stopped.

The next day we day tripped and single portaged. We had a leisurely breakfast and paddled a loop of Gaskin, Winchell, Omega, Henson, and Gaskin and were back in time for a lazy afternoon of napping and reading.

The year before I paddled Poplar to Lizz to Caribou to Horseshoe to Vista to Misqua and back out in a day which was 11 lakes. We left the public landing around 10 am and made it out before sunset single portaging with minimal gear.

So in my experience I would say that in that area you could do 5 lakes VERY easily double portaging and up to 11 if you are single portaging.

OK - 12 or 20 gauge?

(1) On an easy day, I travel about 8 miles - rarely much more. That includes the extra mileage to double portage, i.e. to walk back across the portage to get the second load and carry it across. I can usually average about 2 miles an hour travel speed.

(2) All you'll really need is a medium size plastic box.

(3) Not really although I eat a somewhat similar diet at home. I can't help you much, but I eat for lunch ProBar meal bars for lunch and nuts for snacks. Otherwise I eat a variety of prepackaged dehydrated camping foods for breakfast and dinner. It simplifies things for me and they're lightweight. It's only for a week to 10 days.

Lizz will make a nice entry for you. I entered at Cross Bay in Sept 2012 with a shuttle from Rockwood Outfitters and exited through Lizz and paddled across Poplar to their lodge where I had left my car. Horseshoe is a very nice lake and, if things are going well, you could loop up to Omega (also a beautiful lake) and back through Pillsberry and Allen.

fishing tackle? should be able to fit all you need in a 5" x 9" x 1" box. jigs/tails, cranks, spoons, inline spinners.

i agree with boonie, 8 miles is an easy day, on average.

Agree with Kanoes about the fishing box. One of THE hardest things for me to learn was that I won't use 75% of the fishing tackle I bring. I try to cover the depths in "threes" ie: 3-deep water plugs, 3-shallow or surface plugs, 3-spinners, but then will double that for jigs as they are easily lost in the rocks.

Basically use a small box because you will inevitably fill it. As fishermen we are a sick lot. :)

Agree with both here on the tackle issue (since these guys and others here have given me excellent fishing advice!). I fill two 9x6 planos with what I need for the variety of conditions and stuff those into a 12x6x9 Camptrails fanny pack -- that way I can strap it on for the double portages or just drop into the top of my portage pack.

Food wise: simple hearty breakfasts of oastmeal/fruit
Lunches: tend to be a home made granola/gorp mix of whole grains, nuts, dried fruit and choc.morsels :)
Dinners: fresh veggies that keep (carrots, onion, broc, peppers) and a lightweight carb (cous cous goes pretty far but you can be as creative as you want on this) --- I don't use the pre-package stuff only out of personal preference to avoid the salt content...but sometimes after a whole day of paddling...you need to rehydrate a bit :) so wouldn't rule them out!

Happy healing! Every day is a good day :)

LOL, Thanks for the input but "paleo" is a non grain diet!

Fresh veggies will be going along.

A friend of mine who has long since passed, had the motto "Every day above ground is a good day" and I thought of him constantly while in the ICU. And you just reminded me of him again.

Sorry! Should have researched that a bit more thoroughly. Have thought that if nuts/seeds are permitted, then it's possible to grind those into a paste. If honey (wild) or maple syrup can be included, it can serve as a natural binder that can be "sub-ed" in for the grain in certain meals...or you can just go without the grain! I often do and don't really miss it. Anyway, I'm sure you will put together a winning menu...

I'm curious - how much will 5 days of paleo diet food weigh?

The "soon" I was hoping for was delayed because the scheduler lady was not smart enough to return a phone call for 2 weeks. I solved her scheduling problems in 10 minutes. Too late so now I have to wait until December 17th. To say I'm upset is an understatement, but in the end, it'll work out and I'll be back to a semi normal state. I'll tell you one thing though, planning a trip in your head is good medicine!

I'm always planning a trip...or three :).
