I just tried the new Fleischmann's "Simply Homemade" No Knead Bread Mix. Worked REALLY well as fry bread!! Mix as directed, raise in cold frying pan, after rise time, move pan to medium/low heat, fry turning every 5 minutes or so...great bread! good texture, moist but well cooked, holds together well. Any one tried it??

Isn't rise time like overnight for these no-knead breads? I've been planning for a Scout weekend camp for adult patrol - in a dutch oven. Could be interesting in a JMO - make day ahead - on a mostly paddle low portage day (or a layover).

I do make beer bread at camps - and a good use for warm cheap beer in plastic bottles. Self rise flour, salt, sugar, and beer!

The new Fleischmann's products have a 25 minute rise and a 20 minute (bake)cook.

I sometimes use the betty crocker pizza crust mixes (also a yeast bread with only 5 minute rise)for fry bread and add spices or dried (reconstituted) fruit. I add to make a breakfast cinnnamon apple bread or other spices to make an Italian flavor.

The pizza mix is smaller and good for 4 people. The Fleischmann's is bigger and could give 9 people a biscut size piece.

Do you oil or use butter in the pan Grandma L? I have yet to try bread in camp and have been experimenting with simple breads and bannock at home this winter..My kids are in heaven!

I use Olive Oil in the pan. I am fairly generous with the oil. the key is to start with a cold pan and keep the heat low enough so it cooks through before the outside gets too dark.

Next you can try a "big" frying pan cookie. This is similar to cooking scrambled eggs only using cookie dough in the frying pan and then a cozy for them to finish baking. If you are interested I can give you better directions.

Thanks Grandma L! I am going to give it a try, nothing makes kids happier than fresh baked bread, at home or in camp, besides maybe that cookie!

Forget the instructions. Can I just go along on your next trip? I'll carry the gear. Pretty please?

Well, if the grandkids are too busy for this summer's travel trip with jobs and college plans, I might be looking for more sherpa minions. You could always apply.

The oldest of the kids would not let his mom lead their trip. He said, "No Mom, we want Grandma, she doesn't carry her share on portages by a long shot but, she can really cook!"

I'll keep you posted.
