I'm lucky to live in MN. There's a lot within a 1 day drive from Minneapolis.

We're thinking drive up day one, on the water day 2, 5 days tripping, drive back home day 7. Does that sound realistic?

Depending on your entry point and how much time you need with an outfitter, it is possible to exit the park, drive back to Red Lake, have lunch and be back in Minneapolis in the same day, albeit a long day. I've done this from the Leano EP (camped the last night on Bunny and used a outfitter shuttle). I've also done the same (from the Onnie EP, last camp on Hjlarmar Lakes) and made Kenora before dinner time.

You could do the same going in if you (or your outfitter) has your permits and only make a quick stop in town ... Day 1 you could be camping! For example, I've stayed in Kenora, driven up, waited for my shuttle, driven to Leano and been on Bunny the 1st night. However, I generally spend the first night "camped out" in a motel ... but its a long 2 day drive up for me.

There isn't any place finer. I'm going in about mid-May then another either late summer or September. I am fortunate that I can drive up in about 8 hours and be on either Onnie or Leano by mid afternoon if I want to push to get there. I love the Caribou. But I'm also doing a group trip to BW in late June. So I'm really looking forward to this up coming season.

I've got some dates for later in the summer myself... But I'll have to see if work gets in the way. I WILL do WCPP this year at some point. Congrats on the upcoming trip... You will enjoy it. Work with Harlan... he'll steer you the right way.

Correct. The exception is if you do a west side (Manitoba) entry. In that case, you can arrange for permit delivery via mail/e-mail. (I guess I should say that outfitters, e.g., Harlan, gets permits thru the park office also, but they have a very close working relationship.)

If you are self-outfitting and not using a shuttle, you can pick up the permit at the park office in Red Lake. As you come into town, Highway 105 dead-ends into Howey street where there is a traffic light. Take a left at the light and go maybe 3 blocks. The government building is a 2 story structure on your right. Make a right turn on the near side of the building and go up a slight hill to the back side of the building and turn left into the parking lot. The WCPP offices are easily accessed from there (turn right as you enter the main door on that level)...assuming they haven't moved since 2010.

If park office is closed, they have a "kiosk" pay station where you fill out the info and leave them the money or cc information and you do not have to go into the building to get permit. Fyi

We are open 7 days a week from 6 am throughout 6 pm in the summer and as mentioned above we are a licensed permit issuer so if coming into town, you will find our shop on the left at the lights.
