Im tripping through this area this spring and would prefer not back-tracking out of Raven Lake. Seems the area from Wisini to Raven would/should have some type of an old portage. Satellite maps of Elk show it to be clear and deep. Any thoughts or experiences on is lake?

Pinetree has a brief comment on Elk (walked over from Raven) on the Mugwump Lake PMA8 thread, on this forum. Looks like a pretty good saddle to go over between Raven and Elk. Give us a report, if you go that route! I know nothing about the creek that runs from Elk down into Wisini, but it looks steep at the end. Carrying for sure.

The satellite maps show what looks like a beaver pond between Elk and Wisini but I'm not sure if it's paddle-worthy. The cliff on the southeast shore of Wisini is pretty significant.

I'm not sure what would be easier when getting from Raven to Elk. There is a southerly-looking route that seems flatter than the northerly route over that saddle, but topo maps suggest some water in the area.

The Elk Lake area looks interesting as a whole.

Well here is my visual take of it from the 1990's.

I hiked from Raven to Elk thru a burnt over area and some downfalls. Found a long section of water hose they must of at one time had it down to Raven to fight the fire between the two lakes.
No portage is present that I ever seen, and since my visit I believe some of that area was involved in more recent fires?

Must of been a dry year when we went to Elk lake in MAY. Looked down the hill toward Elk lake expecting a nice fish lake and all I remember is something looking like a shallow pond at best. Disappointed we turned back from our hike.

From Wisini I believe your going to have the workout of your life.

Thanks for the info. It looks like there was some blowdown on the ridges from the satellite maps. I try to compare images of areas that I know for sure are blowdowns.

I see a lake slightly south that is called Balmy lake on google maps that looks puddle-like.

I can't help but think that if this route I'm thinking of were easy, folks would use it. which also makes me want to put a boat into Elk lake even more.

That cliff on wisini is like 100 feet high. I know north of the old campsite on raven burned and is pretty open but still some small steep faces. Bushwhacking can be tough don't overestimate what you think you can do. We bushwhacked into neglige one fall and it was tough easy to get turned around. I have videos of this on my you tube video channel too

I did a lot of bushwacking in many of those areas, just take compass, matches etc. for a little extra precaution.
