I would like any ideas on the forthmentioned canoe. I need a different canoe my old Mad River Traveler is just too heavy [3 back surgeries in 2 years has taken it's toll]. I talked to the guys out at Savage River and they suggested the Deep Creek, and that's the one I was looking at on their website, but I know nothing about Savage River canoes so I'm looking for your thoughts. I posted a suggestion question on general comments as to what I wanted in a solo plus some comments about my self if that would be helpful. Thanks in advance. FRED

Savage River will have a display and canoes at CanoeCopia in Madison. Good chance to talk to the makers and a lot of BWCA.COMers at the same time. Personally I'd lean toward the Blackwater which is designed as a solo from the start. Deep Creek looks as it started out as a tandem and is pretty wide.

My first BWCA trip was in a 69lb Old Town kayak. Thank heavens I stayed on Brule. I wised up, and bought a Wenonah Prism kevlar U/L, and I love it. I single portage with it. I just checked their web site, and it is somewhat cheaper than the Savage River you are considering. Wenonah also has a canoe with the same basic dimensions as the Prism, and three seats (one in the middle). With a kayak paddle I can make that Prism fly! Consider the Wenonah. By the way, I've had a couple of injections for mild spinal stenosis (they worked!). That's not exactly back surgery, but I'm 66 and my back is not pristine. Get an ultralite, you'll love it.
