quote MHS67: " Fire north east of Yellowstone last summer. Unfortunately it was blocking the road!"
what year was that? I was traveling through Wyoming several years back and the park entrance near Cody Wy was closed due to fire.

This was 2013, the road was closed just south of Red Lodge. I had to head south to Cody and go through the park that way. There were fires in Yellowstone also. Had to make a couple detours while in the park. My truck still smelled like smoke when I got back to Calif.

the first time i saw a pack like that it was at a portage landing and i was laughed out loud that i was wading thru a flock of butterflys and not mosquitos.

they are Tiger Swallowtails....I often are them on mud and stinky stuff.
For instance ..I fly fish pasture streams in SE Mn and have seen them many times on cow manure.

quote Mocha: " this morning, early, on Canadian side of gunflint lake. it's almost a mile across the lake."
At first I thought it was ice fishermen before I clicked on it. Cool pic Mocha

hobbydog.i have the same problem with the horizon line.the foreground object seems ok but the lake tips off to the right just a bit.
i try and use the level line in the view screen but often just line up with the frame lines and get that tip over.

When I get conflicts between the foreground and background I try pick a tree and square it up in the post process. In this case the trees behind the fire pit were my guide but yea, that doesn't look quite right.

quote wetcanoedog: "hobby..how did you get the church windowpane effect?"
I use Topaz Simplify I am still learning how to use it. This link gives you some good ideas on how it can be used to enhance photos.

this rock was hidden in dense forest until the 1999 blowdown. once the storm ravaged trees were removed this rock uncovered. really cool!
ps I double posted the first photo so figured I'd just add another photo and skip tomorrow.
in comparing the two photos... the second one is virtually nothing growing out of the cracks but the first one has the cedar and lots of other things. what does this say about the growth environment? is the soil, minimal as it is in the BW, better and richer in the rose lake area? the second rock is on a high ridge now fully exposed to the elements.
here's a photo to give an idea of the size of the rock.

Brantlars, I love your pic. Reminds me of my kids when they were younger. This one is my two kids now grown up telling me to bring it on as I took them around the lake a couple of times. Even they laugh over their expressions when dad "found" a nice wave for them to go over.

Mocha..nice fox shot.which brings up a question.when i was shooting film i hauled around a 300mm for my Nikon, which all together was about the same weight as my tent.so with a good higher end digital would anyone trust the blow up features we have on our computer photo systems to do as good a job on pulling in a distant shot, the fox was not bad but a tiny bit fuzzy.how much more could you get out of it Mocha?
i kept going until the fox was about four inches long on my screen and thought it was still ok as a fox on snow shot.
