I'm thinking about bringing one of our ruggedized Juniper handhelds w/ SMS Mobile on it for mapping and navigation.

We already own quite a few, they're waterproof, dustproof, etc. I could load the maps on it, navigate, measure distances, mark waypoints, import waypoints.

Just wondering if anyone has done this. I've already used it fishing out of a boat and it worked wonderfully.

With maps installed, I don't see why not.
That 1 meter accuracy could be handy when it comes time to locate my coffee cup in the morning... :)

Yeah, it uses GLONASS as well so you're never short on satellites in view :)

We plug a higher accuracy receiver into it for driving field boundaries that will be used for sprayer shut offs. Otherwise, the internal GPS is accurate enough for the rest of our operation.

Make sure it's securely mounted, 4x the cost of a new GPSr, 2x the size and 2x the weight.
It should work well for you, no reason not to.

Agreed. Waterproof does not mean "it floats".

We have ram mounts for handlebars so I'm thinking I'll rob one of those from an ATV and put it on the round thwart. Probably leave the mount there permanently, and put device in pack for portaging and such. (more for balance on the canoe than protection or anything)
