I was wondering if anyone knew where I could buy some good epoxy for a repair in my 38 Special. I have an area about the size of a quarter in the bow ( Hit a SEX Rock while paddling full speed, went to dead stop )... it made me sick.
Anyway, I need a small amount, don't want to pay for a big jug & have it wasted. I built the canoe myself, so know how to repair it... just need a small amount of 2 part epoxy.

In your build, you probably used epoxy resin rather than polyester resin. And I think the rule is that epoxy resin is OK over polyester resin, but poly resin is not OK over epoxy resin....... So, that rules out a trip to the local automotive store to pick up poly resin on the cheap.
The smallest quantities that I have seen from manufacturers like System III, West, and MAS is pint of hardener ($26.00) and quart of resin ($34.00)....... But, after you fix the canoe you could always use the rest on building a paddle. Systems III claims an almost unlimited shelf life.
What you really need is a donation from someone who has a bunch hanging around.......

Thanks, I used MAS when I built it & then ordered a pint of West to finish up. I may have to order a pint if I can't connect with someone that has any extra around. If it shelves that well, might be worth having some around.

I said, I think. Tonight, I checked with my Systems III "The Epoxy Book" and on page 4 found:
"Observe the general rule that epoxy resins may be applied over cured polyesters that have been dewaxed and well sanded but polyesters should never be used over cured epoxy resins"
Also about shelf life of Systems III epoxy resins:
"All solvent-free epoxies have essentially unlimited shelf lives so long as they are stored in sealed containers. The resin may crystallize or the hardener may darken but this does not affect its performance. If in doubt, do a test to satisfy yourself that it cures properly"

I'm not talking poly resin. I mean epoxy glue. Something like this.

Any luck finding some? From your profile I see you are from Brainerd, I am originally from up that way too and get back there once in a while. I have a bit of S3 Silvertip left, how many oz. do you need?

No I haven't done anything yet, canoe is still hanging in the garage... if we ever get some nice weather I will make time to fix it. the spot I need to fix is about a 1 inch chip that needs to be filled in, so it wouldn't take much.
Appreciate the offer, I live just north of Brainerd off Gull Lake Dam Road.

And thanks again for swapping stories over a cold beverage. If you need more, let me know. Yes, we should do a little paddling in your neck of the woods, will let you know when I take the Passage over there.
