Hi all,

Getting ready for a kayak trip to the Queen Charlottes soon. I'm looking for a good all purpose powdered milk, mostly for breakfast time cereal or porridge but also for coffee and some other simple cooking. I do like to be able to drink it straight, but most powdered milks just taste so lousy... I have tried Nido but found it to be too creamy and too much fat. Is there anything else out there that is worth a try?

Hi Marco,

If you are looking for an excellent product, you simply must try Milkman powdered milk. It is the closest thing to a 'real-milk' taste I have ever found in a milk powder. When reconstituted in water it has a 1-2% fat content so its great with cereal, coffee or oatmeal. You could also do other cooking with it and you won't even know you're using a milk powder. Also, it mixes up really easily!

Another thing I like about it is that it comes in 1 quart pouches. This means you only use what you need at a time so it can stay on your shelf until the following year if you don't use it up. The containers of Nido aren't as good for shelf-life, especially with the higher fat content.

Check out milkmanmilk.com to buy it buy the case. Unfortunately, I can't find it in retail stores right now.

Amy, thank you so much! This Milkman milk powder sounds perfect. I will take a look on their website and go about ordering some.

I use a lot of different ones. I like to add a non-dairy creamer to it which makes it taste more like real milk.

Try the full flavored version of Nido. It might negate your need for the creamer.

The Milkman is definitely the best out there.

Have you tried Nido whole milk powder? The Milkman I found at REI is 5% fat and fairly expensive. Here is a link for the good Nido:

FYI the Nido has as much or more fat than Milkman. I have tried both and think they are both good choices for BWCA use. If you don't need a lot of it the convenience of the 1 qt Milkman envelopes may offset the higher price for you.

Just a little research based on what I could find with just checking two sites for each product. Milkman milk has 80 calories in an 8 ounce serving and just 10 fat calories and costs $.075 based on a quart package from REI. Nido has either 150 or 160 calories 70 or 80 fat calories, and costs about $0.41 based on a 1.6 kg container from Walmart (34 - 8 ounce servings).

I've grown fond of Nido, using it on grapenuts for quick breakfasts or in pudding or other baking mixes. Of course I'd use whole milk or half and half on cereal if I could, so it may be richer than some like. I've seen mentioned mixing it with Carnation non-fat dry milk.
