I usually wait a few weeks. It's too hard to get a shot off until the leaves clear out a bit. I actually wish the season opened a bit latter. Opening as early as it does just encourages people to take ground shots, which is not what bird hunting is about.

I agree with you about waiting for the leaves to clear out a bit! The challenge of bird hunting is to take the birds on the wing, one of the reasons I love duck hunting. I will admit I have taken a few birds on the ground, but I really do try and kick them up and get a shot on the wing.

I kind of want to head up to the Finland-Isabella area Saturday, but with reports of a few birds this year, from experience in past years there will be quite a few people running around,so maybe wait a few days, and than it will be nice a quite.
Always like to go on a morning of a hard frost, than warming up with sunshine during the day. Grouse love the sunshine and warmth.
Also like around Oct. 1 leaves will be awesome up north and chance to see a bull Moose in the rut.

I shot at a couple with my bow in the past, lets just say they are pretty safe.
