Anyone been in here at all?? I'm looking at going into High and Fishtrap lakes northeast of Boulder Junction, WI.

Would be glad to hear from anyone that has been on any of the lakes in this park.

If you are in that area, I would recommend the Sylvania Wilderness about 20 minutes from there. Canoe only, nice lakes and sites. It's not Boundary Waters, but a good substitute. Email me if you want more detailed info.

There are actually a series of lakes and rivers that are interconnected (with an occasional portage around a dam, etc.) that allows canoeing from the Boulder Juction area all the way to the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. I have a map but have not done the route yet.

Anyone here done it?

I'm up there quite a bit. It's a nice route for a quick getaway. A lot of the lakes are busy with motorboat traffic. The potages aren't bad, usually a dam or a culvert to go around. Some of the sites are very nice also. There's a few sections I spend weekends paddling around.

Between High and Fishtrap is actually a lake called Rush Lake on some maps. It's acres of liliy pads and stumps. It's by the culvert between the two lakes. Motorboats can't get back in there, but canoes slide over the logs nicely. There's some really good LM Bass fishing if you aren't afraid to toss a hook deep into the salad.

I was up here this last weekend. I camped on pallet lake, portaged to Lost Canoe and Escanaba lakes. This is just south of fish trap and High lakes. I did have a nice trip. I was surprised by a couple of things.

1) Pallet and Escanaba lakes you need a special permit to fish and are basically catch an release only. (you can keep a 22" SM on pallet and a 28" walleye on Escanaba) There is a DNR check point at the Escanaba boat landing that issues the permits and you have to report back to them each day with your catch, what baits you used and hours of fishing.

2) I thought pallet lake being a carry in lake would be nice and quiet. 4 out of 5 campsites were full.

The fishing for smallmouths was quite good on Pallet, caught 12 fish between 16" and 18" and another 20 some smaller.

At the DNR station there was a map that promoted several canoe routes. It was similar to the map posted on line. Northern Highlands

However it had the specific canoe routes included as well. I think most of the canoe routes are point to point routes and not loops. Dave at the DNR check point between said you could get a map by contacting the headquarters at trout lake.

in 2009 a small group of us paddled from high lake to the flambeau flowage. it travels through a lot of lakes and a lot of time on the manitowish river. we went in july and saw very few people. fishing is good but check the water level with hawks nest outfitters before you go because the river is very small and can be more dragging than floating late in the season.
