I was wondering if anybody knew of any good long winter routes that can be done using a pulk and skis. There are just so many lakes and routes to take in this area that I am overwhelmed! Are there any keen backcountry xc skiers who wouldn't mind sharing any good routes? Or maybe a canoe route that would work great in as a winter trip? Thanks :)

There are a number of winter trails that are primarily maintained by the dog sled companies that run in the area. I know there is one from Moose Lake up to Knife (through ensign and vera). There is one to Thomas / fraiser that starts at snowbank (through disappointment) with a side trail up to Ima. I have also heard there is a new one that goes up to crooked.

What is "long"? Do you mean a week+ long trip?

Moose-Ensign-Vera and Four Mile Portage are the most heavily used mushing routes. They are flat and therefore friendly to pulks, but also busier.

Snowbank-Disappt-Muzzle-Thomas doesn't get opened as early, sometimes not until February depending on the winter. It doesn't get used as heavily. There's a nice loop starting from Disappt up toward Jordan and back around through Abinodji-Boot.

From the Gunflint, Tuscarora is heavily used, especially at the trout opener. Anything beyond Tusc sees almost no visitation.

If you have time and want to cover ground, following the border from Sag to Crooked will give you lots of wide open lakes. Otherwise, if you want smaller lakes check the area S-SW of Poplar.

Anywhere there is trout fishing there will be activity.
