Thanks for the very nice trip report, jeepgirl. I enjoyed my 2012 trip through some of the same area. I'm glad to hear that your second solo went well. It sounds like you are becoming more comfortable and confident with soloing. You may find yourself traveling a little more. I also have found myself spending more and more time writing on my solos.

Thank you for sharing, I love reading solo trip reports and trying to pick up on how people deal with falls, storms, and other difficulties when on their own. Great job! I'm not getting any younger and reports like yours keep encouraging me to try a solo of my own while I still can.

Awesome report and thanks for sharing! I did my first solo at the end of Sept. and I can't wait for my 2nd one. I've been to the area you were in 3 times and love it. I've also stayed at Rockwood's bunkhouse a few times as well. Mike and Lin are awesome.

My wife and I were in GM from Sat. to Tue. the weekend of the Dragon Boats and watched some of the races. We walked through the campground more than once coming and going from Nelson's Travelers Rest and wish we would have seen the Jeep carrying a solo canoe w/ the flying moose sticker.

Ducks, we stayed at the group campsite. My Jeep was parked by the ball field.
I am planning a 9 day solo next summer. This time I will enter after the Dragon Boat races. I may even get in 2 solo trips.
I originally thought I would do a 3 day solo and get solo tripping out of my blood. Only the opposite happened. I fell in love with soloing. I like the challenge of doing everything on my own. Mostly I like being on the water. It centers me. I love how accomplished I feel even after spending 20 minutes trying to hang a bear rope.
I will solo as long as I am able.

"My teeth are clean and I have dry feet!" Classic wilderness statement! Love it!
(Can I use that one?)

We were on Gaskin the night of the storm also. Quite a night! Glad you solo'd through it unscathed. Nice job.
(which campsite were you on?)

cowdoc. I was on the island site just up from the portage from Horseshoe lake. It is a beautiful site. lots of trees for hammock hanging, easy landing spot and the potty is close by.

Thinking about solo so good to hear you had the fortitude. I agree with being centered on the water dad past year ago still feel his present

A really nice report. My buddy and I were in Grand Marais that Saturday and watched some of the races. We were heading up the trail towards Round Lake as we were going in for a week thru Brant Lake.

Thanks for sharing.

Happy Paddling.

I had time to read a few trip reports and I'm glad I picked yours. I've soloed a few times and it is definitely a different feeling. I've watched the Dragon Races once and wondered who those crazy people were.

Soloing is awesome. I have 2 planned this summer. Dragon Boat racing is addictive. Once you paddle a dragon boat with 20 other people, you will never stop. It is the longest 2 minutes ever and the most rewarding.

Nice report. Thanks for sharing.

Lots of soloists mention ear plugs for the night time Hebbie Jebbies. I am either very naïve or so exhausted it doesn't matter. Your downed tree experience has me convinced to skip the ear plugs when solo. Now...bunking with a snoring buddy...that's another matter altogether...

We are going in that route (my family) over Memorial Day. Might even attempt the 96-rod pp to Gaskin. We'll look for that rock on Caribou :) too!

Thanks for the report!

Nice report. After 25+ years of tandem tripping, I am planning my first solo for early June in that same area. Now I'm worried about "night creepers". Thanks a lot.
