Looking for some help, very interested in going to Wabakimi. What outfitters to call for train times, plane info, fishing info, who to talk to that you would trust. Guessing, first part of June or late May for around 10 days or longer. Thank You.......Terry

Try the Wabakimi Project (Google it). The project founder "Uncle" Phil Cotton can be contacted at: pjcotton@tbaytel.net for info.

go to Midwest Mountaineering spring Expo and talk to:
Wabakimi Project
Ontario Parks
the outfitter from Wabakimi that is always there

or go to Canoecopia in Madison

by doing this you'll get info from 3 different perspectives

or just get out your credit card and call one of the outfitters now

We used WildWaters
They rented us canoes, coordinated our train, assisted with maps, and shuttled us to put in and from train station. We were very pleased with the service.

By the way...The Wabakimi Project maps are the most current, but don't necessarily have ALL campsite info. We found that using both our outfitter supplied maps and the WP maps we had really comprehensive coverage for campsites, portages, fishing spots, and other points of interest like pictos, special forest features, etc.

The Wabakimi Project maps show all campsites that we have located (in a 5,000,000 acre area)that will support a party of 4 with space for two 4 man tents, and a fire pit or signs of one in the recent past. Smaller sites and a lot of fishing lodge lunch sites may not be included.
If we showed smaller sites, a larger party might make the error of paddling an extra several kilometers to set themselves up for the next day's paddle, only to find the site inadequate for their needs.
We also endeavor to show campsites that are nearest the ends of portages and rapids to make it easier to figure when you've done enough paddling for the day, or if you can safely reach or pass the next landmark or water feature.

mrcanoe speaks with authority. We found a campsite that was not on our outfitter maps late one day after we were chased out of a site by wild fire. It sure was helpful to find out the we didn't have to go 10K to get another site.

SAVANT LAKE - ARMSTRONG, or ALLANWATER BRIDGE - ARMSTRONG, $22.60CN
Likely that fare applies to any of the small stops in the park.
See ViaRail
But an outfitter can contact ViaRail and arrange for a stop at several spots in the park. (Ours was Schwartz's Trail.)

Check to see the cost for a canoe. Last I heard, it was $100cdn no matter how far you went.

We did not pay anything extra for our canoes in 2011.

Yes you can get lucky . Sometimes the crew forgets. But don't rely on them forgetting.

Mrcanoe and I have not been using an outfitter though so that may have been built into outfitting fees.

We went two years ago through Mattice's; nice folks, gave us what they promised. Our maps didn't have portages or campsites. Like Woodland Caribou, campsites are a bit far apart because of the dense spruce forest.

We weren't charged for our canoes on the train. It's worth the price and pretty fun.

We got off at Schmidt's landing; spent the rest of the night in one of those mostly abandoned cabins, and headed up to Smoothrock. We did a loop back to Caribou and Little Caribou; Mattice's brought our truck up the morning we finished.

If you to the further sites on the train, be sure you check with outfitters that you have canoes up to some of the conditions that are found there.

Fishing was fair to good, we were there just a week after ice out. We saw a couple of fly-in parties but no other canoers.

Nice people at both cafes in Armstrong.

srt- you did my 2011 trip in reverse. Did you camp at the top of the 1200 meter portage going into the south end of Smoothrock?

We didn"t make to the park, we lost 2 days of our trip because of truck trouble. We made it to the north side of Big Caribou just out side of the park. The last couple of days the wind was up pretty bad so we played it safe and stayed around the islands ducking out of the wind. Beautiful country and great fishing in Caribou Lake. Next time I"ll make it there, learned a lot. Large lake trout and big walleyes can be had, had a great time until the winds switched and came out of the north. Clem helped us with the fishing spots and shuttling our truck out of little Caribou, great guy. I have never graphed so many fish in my life. I will return to Wabakimi.........Terry
