Anyone have experience with this pad (paging SteveElms73)? What size do you use (large or XL)? Did it keep you as warm as advertised? I am looking to upgrade my hand-me down original style Thermarest with something that will keep me warmer in the winter (sleep cold). I like the Exped Downmat, but they are more expensive and I am a little leery of the problems some seem to have (but are readily addressed by the manufacturer).

Here is a link:

I just tested my new Mondoking up in Algonquin for 3 nights last week. The coldest it got down to was -23 C. I opted for the XL version (the pad is ridiculously big regardless so I figured I may as well get the super big one..I don't plan on bringing it backpacking :) It was very very comfy and I would certainly say it worked as advertised in regards to the warmth. The one thing I did notice was that when I packed everything up the area under the pad had melted and frozen a bit. I had laid a tarp down and then a felt moving blanket over that and then the Mondoking on top of that. I'm not sure that is necessarily a sign that the pad is not insulating enough or not. The R value is over 11 so I didn't put any closed cell foam or anything under it although I may try it next time just to see (I bought a cheapo $20 closed cell pad from Sail with a reflective side that I think I'll throw under it next time just to see if it makes any difference). But man the thing was comfy. I wasn't able to get it to fit into the storage bag it came in when I rolled it up at camp. There is just so much air in the thing and with cold hands etc I just couldn't do it so I just rolled it up the best I could and threw it into the truck. It's not the pad for you if you are looking for packability or saving weight, but if comfort and insulating capabilities are priorities then I don't think you can go wrong (and it's way cheaper than an Exped!)

Thanks for the response Steve, looks like a great pad for non-ultra light trips. How did the new bag perform?

No problem! The bag was awesome :) Started to get a bit damp after the third night but I did nothing to dry it out so I'll have to watch that on future trips I think

I think I'm going to give this pad a try. Thanks again.
