What do you guys run for leaders up there? I have seen the Rio toothy critter leaders, they look ok although a bit spendy, does anyone use anything different so as not to get bitten off?

Ive never really targeted pike directly, but i would guess the thin wire such as the south bend leaders would be effective. good question Hammer.

I've used 30lb test 'hard' monofilament in the past. Only brought in 'hammer handles' so far though, still looking for 30+.

Do you use leaders when fly fishing for smallies up there? I just know from past experience that when fishing for smallmouth with a spinning rod up there that you tend to lose a lot of gear to pike.

I usually use Tyger's knot-able coated wire. You can get by with some pretty thin diameter stuff, and it moves a lot better than heavy mono. .010 diameter-10 lb. test strength was enough to hook and land a 42" pike last summer on a bunny leech.

Second commit to you today. But have you used it on larger poppers? Can you keep it on the top is a better question?

For the big pike megadivers, yes. I'll use a 6-8 inch piece, fish it fast, and it stays on top. If I don't have any wire, 30lb Power Pro or Fireline is pretty abrasion resistant, and it's light enough to float with a popper.

I have used American Fishing Wire knottable leader on my floating flies and they don't sink.
I haven't used the tyger stuff yet.
