Hey folks,

I've done a fair share of winter camping and BWCA trips, but have never combined them. So...

3 guys w/ no destination or goal in mind, except spend 3 days/nights in as much solitude as we can find w/ a short hike in. We all have sleds, skis and snowshoes, along w/ a small auger for getting water (no fishing). We're doing some winter hiking/camping in CO later in the month and figured this would be a good trip to break in a newbie.

We'll have about 4-5 hours of daylight in/out and I'd like to just make just one camp - anyone have any ideas on an EP/Lake we should be shooting for?

This is where I have gone and it is all yours. Can't find an easier place to go...IMHO

Go for the furthest North spot on Alton. You can go up the Kelso river and or cut through the woods...semi bushwhack style.

Circle marks a camp up on high off the water with a nice path to the bay for water. Great views and lots of options for day hikes.
The red lines are portages and the one by camp is a bit of a challenge. The others are as easy as a bike path in the metro.

there is a picture from camp in my album...FWIW (The one with the tents is the camp I have circled and the one with just tracks is the one on a point on Kelso. The one with the sled is the East end of the Kek and unrelated.)

So the picture of all of you at the sports bar...that's NOT at the campsite right? ;)

That spot looks good and I'd also eyed site #911 on the north end of Sawbill after it hooks to the East. Good to hear that we're on the right track though - I just wasn't aware until yesterday (though not shocked) that so many of the EPs weren't accessible.

Just wanted to loop around quick and say thanks for the tip on the campsite on Alton - it was perfect and exactly like you said it'd be. Not too much to report on the goings on other than an otter has made the area just in front of the large "patio" rock his home too...lots of surfacing and diving and a bit of skidding across the snow.

Cool. I still haven’t seen an otter in the BWCA.
