We're tossing around ideas as to where to go with our kids this August. They will be 16, 13.5 and 10.5. While they're fairly capable and have done the BW plenty, going from Nina Moose River to Lake Agnes last August was great, but we don't want to push them too much.

So, my question is other input.

We plan on 4 days.

EP 30 We've done as adults, but wondering about a trip involving Lake One to Insula and back out.

EP 37 We'd take the route up through Lake Polly and down through Phoebe R and end at Sawbill.

EP 50 Loop starting at Ham, down through Cross Bay, over to Tuscarora and out Round.

Anyone ever done any of these with kids? Thanks for your thoughts.

Well, we decided on EP 50. Gives us a few route options. :)

I have not been to EP 50 yet. Please let me know how it goes with the kids. I would like to hit this area with my kids in a couple of years.

Enjoy!

EP 50 is a great call. I have not been to the other EP's you mentioned. If you do not do the loop, Frost Lake is a great destination from EP. Some nice beach sites there and a shot at seeing a moose.

It would be great to read a trip report with the kiddos when you are back! I am always looking for more fun ideas as a family. Have a great trip!

If you choose the EP50 I'd suggest reversing the direction because several of the portages (7 total) to Gillis might easier because you will be taking them downhill. However there is one from Brandt which will require effort to climb it, cross the flat stretches and then drop down to the next lake. Also the one out of Flying into Green if I remember my map correctly is a climb up and out of the water. The reverse of this leaving from Green would be more strenous so be glad if you choose this direction! Just my opinion -- others will have better counsel.

Good family route we've done recently: LIS up to Loon and basecamped on Loon. Just a thought. Portages aren't too bad. You can lunch at the top of Devil's Cascade as we did before descending back down to the Loon River which breaks up the portaging and is a nice break on a good day.

The Cross Bay or a Lizz Swamp entry might be where we choose this year as family trip options. Again, just my two cents on this---sounds like some great options!

EP 50 is our favorite! Though we have yet to go to Tuscarora from there- I think that is this year's trip but we haven't planned yet.

I can vouch for the beginning of your route being very family friendly. And if you want to consider another option... heading to Long Island Lake/Frost/Cherokee is another wonderful trip out of EP 50. It wouldn't be a complete loop, you'd have to double back through a portion of the route on your way back but once you hit Cross Bay again you could head out through Snipe/Missing Link/Round.

My friend and I took our girls through much of the route you mentioned a couple of years ago. We did Round - Brant - Flying - Green - Gillis and back out through those same lakes. It's a cool area with a couple of rugged portages. This time my husband and I are planning to take our kids Ham/Cross Bay - going down through Snipe and over to Tusc and out Round or somewhere down in the Long Island Lake area.

My husband and I have done Lizz/Swamp but wanted to see some new waters and I'm doing LIS for the second time with a group of women this fall. :)

Twins87 - Yes, one of our options is do go down to Long Lake or Cherokee and back out. We'll probably decide which route closer to the trip, but we chose EP 50 because it provides lots of options. :) We've been to Long Lake and Cherokee via Sawbill and Skipper/ Portage on two different trips, but it would be fun to come in from the north.

I really like the area you have chosen and agree it is family friendly. 2 years ago I did a daddy/daughter trip with my then 5 yo daughter entering at Cross #50. Then last summer my wife and I did a day trip entering at Missing Link from Round and exiting at Cross Bay River and then just walking back to Round down the road.

Have a great trip!
