Hey folks, just wanted to take a poll of other families and see if anyone is thinking about this weekend for a first-of-the-year trip into the bwca. Any thoughts on possible destinations (Lake/EP).We're thinking gunflint maybe Lizz Swamp or Cross...could switch to something else though, probably about 3-4 days tops and might be nice to see another family out there.

I am going in the weekend before Memorial Day for a 9 day trip with SerenitySeeker. I am not taking the kids as they have school.

Thanks Luft! Sounds like a great trip for you. We are jailbreaking our kids that day around noon to go on this. They are not complaining :). Thinking we might make it to Horseshoe to basecamp. I'd like to make it to Gaskin and maybe even Winchell for some exploring and fishing but I'm not pushing it. Wondering if there have been any moose sightings in that area in the past season or so? That would be a treat but just to be in the backcountry will be nice enough (a little sun would be good too :)!

Jeepgirl had 2 moose sightings from her campsite on Horseshoe last July when she was there.

I saw a moose the year before on Gaskin with Serenityseeker so there are definitely moose in the area.

Have a great trip with the kids! I thought Gaskin was very pretty and just one steep portage to get there from Horseshoe.

We're planning on going in through Sea Gull lake EP#54 Memorial day weekend. Our 3 year old will be along for that trip.

From the sound of your proposed EPs, it's doubtful we'd cross paths once out on the water. But, we will be spending Friday night in one of Tuscarora Lodges bunkhouses and enjoying breakfast there the next morning.

We're heading to Sylvania Wilderness that weekend.

We'll be staying there as well so we'll look for you!

Enjoy the Sylvania -- it's one of the places that I still want to get to!

That reminds me that I better confirm with Rachel or we'll be sleeping in the car the night before!

My 9yo dtr and I are headed in at Lizz on May 30th, headed for Horseshoe for some base camping. Perhaps we will see you!

Thanks Koonie. We'll be in a white/red Kelty Salida 2. Probably have my SRQ17 and a Wenonah Prism II (17ft). We will most likely be basecamping on Horseshoe as well. We'll keep an eye out for you.

I will look for you both as well. I will be in that area from the 29th on. Look for a red Hemlock Kestrel solo.

Hey Brux,

We sort of did :). We sold our Champlain because we could no longer fit. Our kids at 10yrs & 12yrs old have grown so much over the last year that our family had exceeded the space/weight capacity of that 18-footer. I bought an SRQ17 to use as my solo and tandem trips with my wife. We are renting a second on this trip because it was cheaper than one 18.5 or 19ft kevlar boat. We will paddle them as solos with the kids in the bow for ballast if they choose not to paddle!

Hey folks,

I checked dates on this holiday and it's on the calendar for the weekend of the 23rd/24th with Memorial Day celebrated on Monday the 25th. We may miss some of you as it looks like you all will be heading in the following weekend.

In any event, I hope everyone has a good trip and the weather cooperates!

Thanks!

Sorry that I will miss you as I am definitely headed into the Lizz area the weekend after the holiday. I will be down in the Knife and Number Lakes the holiday week before so we definitely won't be crossing paths.

Yup, I'm taking my 3yr old daughter on her third trip along with a buddy and his 4-5yr old son. We will pick the EP this weekend based on what's available and where we've never been.

Without a kid I rarely go on these busy weekends, but choose them with kids because I think that expectations for minimal noise are lower on the entry lakes. Meaning, I won't get worked up if my kid has a temper tantrum on an entry lake on Memorial Day weekend versus being in a more secluded party of the BWCA off-peak when people are truly looking for solitude. That's also why I won't take her too far in yet...and she's only three.
