My wife and I are going to take a month off of work this summer, and are planning to go to Wabakimi. So I'm just going to throw this out there: what you YOU do?

Here's some parameters:

No fly-in. Taking a month off is already a financial hit.

Fishing is not a priority.

We like scenery, and we like portaging.

One potential idea I'm kicking around is to enter Wabakimi via Little Caribou, loop down to the Allanwater Bridge, and continue south and then east via the Brightsand and Kopka Rivers. (Leaving Wabakimi proper.)

That's one idea. Looking for input. Maybe with the amount of time we have (3+ weeks on the water) someone's got a better idea?

Thanks.

Brian.

If you haven't already checked it out check out MYCCR trip reports for Ontario. The report was by true-north. They took the train from Armstrong to AllanWater station then went south on the BrightSands river down through Antler,to Wapikamaski to Harmon, back to the Brightsands to the Brightsands Bridge and then went East on a river I'm not even going to try to spell, to the Kopa river then north back to Armstrong, seems like it took them about 2 weeks. Extremely well written report with GPS cords, details about rapids, campsites, ect. FRED

I would start at savant lake and head north to the Albany river. Go down the albany a way and find a route to either Armstrong or savant lake. Be prepared for whitewater, some you will be traveling upriver, so lining and wading will be skills to have. The Kopka is a gorgeous river, there are some famously tough portages though. If it is just the two of you in one canoe be extra cautious. Loose that canoe in a rapids and Wabakimi is the real wilderness. Maybe it doesn't matter as much anymore with radios and all but not so long ago it was frowned upon to travel with one canoe. Also for this type of trip I really prefer a royalex canoe.
