ok, we are going back to Mexican Hat (7/31), any chance you would share this spot you mentioned a few years back?

"(The falls at Mex Hat is quite possibly the 2nd best place on the lake to catch walleye. But there is another spot where I caught them at a rate of over 30 per hour.)"

Thanks,
Larry

Hi Larry,
The Falls is a good place to catch 'Eyes but the campsite there is way overused and buggy. The best place on the lake for fishing, as far as I'm concerned, is due west. There is a channel that leads to the portage to Nutria. At the pinch point leading into that channel there is a shoal that, as I recall, extends diagonally across the channel. Sunrise and sunset that's where you want to be fishing. I don't remember catching anything that big but plenty of 2 - 3 pounders. We stayed at a campsite at the northern end of the north arm not far from the portage to Glenn. It was quite nice.

Also there is water coming in by the portage to burnt rock. We did well there too.

Thanks you all. The only time we were were at Mexican Hat, we did not have all that much time and knew that one spot was good. I will let you know what we discover.

As an aside, was pulling my fishing stuff together this past weekend and realized I have nothing to buy, just did not lose many lures maybe none) at all last year…….. and then remembered that we fished that very simple, white twister tail with a 1/4 unpainted head just about the whole trip. (pix attached for those who have not tried it, swim it for pike and it works for that too) I have to say I was a bit disappointed.

Hmm, maybe a new reel would help me feel better….

Thanks again.
Larry

Yep. That's what I use about 90% of the time (especially early in the season), although I generally go with a white jig head. I also like the Kalin 5" twister tail grub. I'll sometimes put on a stick bait just to see something different running thru the water.

(And I guess, you are no longer sworn to secrecy based on the post above.)
