Do you take a bed along for your pooch? I usually just take a small fleece blankie, but I feel like she would like to have something more as she would rather curl up on my sleeping bag. I see this one at REI and it's on sale. Any other ideas/suggestions?

I do not bring a dog bed. I'm sure Echo would appreciate it if I did:).

On the trips w/ my wife he just laid in between our legs on our bags and pads like he does at home in our bed. On my 2 solos with him I laid my CCS Guide pack (it has a foam pad inside it for back padding) next to my legs and he laid on that with his head on my legs. One of my solos was end Sept./beg Oct. and I had a small fleece bag along that I had laying on the pack that I ended up having to put on top of him because he was shivering the 2 nights it got down to the 30s. I did not bring the extra fleece along on the Aug. solo.

My dog almost refuses to lay down unless he's on a bed or pillow. However I do not bring a bed for him. I do bring a small fleece sleeping bag with that rolls up really small. That gets laid down at the foot of my sleeping back in the corner of the tent and he's content with that. He's got a short coat so I do sometimes cover him with the blanket on cool nights to keep him warm.

If I don't provide him anything he tries to sneak his way into my sleeping back with me at night.

I bring an old zrest for in the canoe, in the tent, and around camp. I also put an exped multimat in the tent to protect against wet dog, doubles as blanket if needed.

I always bring something for him to sleep on and designate as "his place". He would never do it at home, but in the tent he seams to think its first come first serve which is especially a problem if he is wet. It also helps under the tarp where I can lay his pad down and he knows that is where he should lay down - keeps him cleaner than laying in the dirt.

I've brought a variety of things along depending on weather and space available. At minimum I'll bring his sleeping bag, which was my old Boy Scout summer synthetic bag cut down to 1/3 original size, and he'll sleep on top of that. On colder trips I've also brought a fairly compact bed similar to the link above with a piece of blue close cell padding added. I haven't field tested it yet, but I made him a special bed for winter trips with a quality synthetic base and down top.

Great ideas. Thank you, everyone! Maybe I'll try to make one. I might try making one out of part of an old sleeping bag as someone mentioned.

I really like the old sleeping bag idea. I have an old mummy bag from my boy scout days that the zipper doesn't work that hasn't been used for many years that's sitting up in the attic. It is going to get cut down to about 1/3 it's size. I really like the idea of it being something for him to lay on outside also. Thanks Jaywalker

We have the ruffwear bed. Up here in Canada they do not go on sale and we cannot buy them online from US retailers so they are crazy expensive BUT it was worth it. We did a 23 day trip this past summer and it was great for him to have his own bed in the tent.

I cut down an old synthetic bag for my dog and sewed fleece to one side and will bring that along, but I've also bought a closed cell foam pad and cut it down and then just put it next to me near my shoulders. I sleep with my bag totally unzipped and on top of me like a blanket, if it gets cold I throw it over the dog. He likes this better than the bag.

For October trips my husband and I bring a twin down blanket along and the dog either lies on top of it at our feet or if it gets really cold comes and lies next to me under the down blanket. As a joke we bought our dog a Christmas themed dog sweater thinking he'd have it on for two minutes, and he seems to actually like it. I'm toying with bringing it next time we go camping, or possibly buying him something a bit more dignified.
