This is a wonderful start to a 4 year old granddaughter's fly fishing. Two weeks ago my wife and I took our four year old and 9 year old granddaughters to our pond. I took my 6 wt. rod and helped the four year old cast it a few feet. I had a Gulp one inch yellow honey worm on a #8 hook. Almost immediately a bluegill hit and she finally managed to bring it in. Then we cast again and the line only went out about 7 feet and a small channel cat hit. She struggled to get him in but finally got him in. It was her first fish and she caught two easily. The nine year old then cast two times and caught one cat and one shell cracker. This does not sound as exciting as some other stories but hopefully we will have two future dedicated fly fishers.
My other story is about the final day spent in NW Ontario this summer. We had spent five weeks at our primitive cabin five miles from the Quetico. On our last morning before leaving I took one last paddle out with my fly rod. I was using a well worn popper on an 8 wt. rod. It was early morning and the wind was calm so the canoe solo was not a problem. A SM bass exploded under the fly and I finally brought him in. It was the largest SM of the summer. He revived easily and I let him go. Can't wait until next summer.
