I have been wanting to put up a canoe rack on my garage side wall to store my solo canoe.
I decided to simply use 12" x 15" shelf brackets, 2" x 2" wood to extended the length of the bracket and orange foam noodle to cushion the gunwales and protect me from hitting my head on the brackets.
It seems very secure, just the right height for me to easily lift the canoe into place.
You can see that the garage door tracks run right above the canoe, so I had some height considerations.

quote OldFingers57: "Is that just a shelf bracket? How much weight is it rated for? "
This is just a Menards/Home Depot type of metal shelf bracket.
I have used this style bracket in the past with 12" x 4' partial board shelves and would guess with 2 brackets I had 50lbs plus on them with no problem. Since I knew that I would probably never have much more than 50 lbs of canoes on them I'm pretty comfortable with weight limit.
I did use size #12 2" wood screws to secure the brackets to the 2 x 4s. If you were really concerned you could easily add another bracket in the center.

We just used your design to build racks for our two canoes. The only differences are that we used pipe insulation and, on the top rack, added insulation to the diagonal piece in case we bump the lower canoe into it.
Thanks for the great design. It took us about 15-30 minutes to assemble two racks and they feel nice and solid.

It is cool to see someone save time and money by using someone else's idea and design on different projects here on the board.

Thank you for the idea OldScout. I will be replicating your design this weekend for my "new" to me canoe. The ease of loading and unloading the canoe to and from the car with this design makes great sense!
I will be returning the pulley system that I just ordered.

I have had a couple of similar setups in my garage for 20+years. I skipped the metal bracket and just used a 2x4 at a 45 degree angle. Not a great picture but you can see it in the background here. My old 2x4 canoe rack rests in between the two brackets make an nice storage area for paddles, rod cases and other long items. The second 2x4 on top of another is not necessary. I just added this to raise the canoe a bit so the portage pad would clear the roof of my vehicle. The prior vehicle was not as tall.

Good idea... I don't have enough walls however.. all hanging from the ceiling by anchors and straps are (2) 17' canoes & (3) Kayaks :D .... add that to the 17 CO Camper canoe in the back yard and we're ready for any adventure!

quote Koz: "Is that a dynel skid plate? Did you do that yourself? "
The skid plates are self designed and installed. The main part of the skid plate is simply a number of layers of epoxy with graphite powder and colloidal silica added. The canoe is over 12 years old and I probably rolled on a new coat of epoxy every 2-3 years as needed. About 2 years ago I decided to beef up skid plate with a couple of layers of fiberglass tape that I had laying around. I seems to be holding up well.

Good point. I think our next canoe has to hang!

Great idea! I'd love to spend a week organizing my garage to make it really work for me. I have three boats hanging, another one on sawhorses with a kayak on top of it, and one more kayak standing on the wall. That leaves two more canoes outside against the side of the garage. I'm too short to dink with much from the ceiling, so they hang kinda low so I can reach them. It works for now, but it's kinda a mess. Maybe they can all go on one wall in the stall I don't use for cars. Hmmmm.

Have 11 canoes, 2 vehicles, and 2 motorcycles stored in my 2 car garage.
8 canoes are on racks I built on walls; 3 are suspended from ceiling.
All wood used (mostly 2 x 4s) was obtained from scrap piles at construction sites.
I ask for permission to take the wood; have never been turned down.
On the suspended racks I used retired pieces of nylon webbing, eye bolts & scrap wood.
Basically, the only thing I purchased was a box of deck screws, and eye bolts.
Can't take canoes down with vehicles in garage, but moving them outside is no big deal.
Enclosed photos should clarify the setup.

I like all of the ideas and suggestions. The problem I have in my 24' deep x 36' wide building is I have a 30' tube heater hanging up along the north wall. My garage door is also 8' tall and 16' wide and where it is located is creating a storage issue for me. I think I am going to trapeze hang it with some nylon straps connected to eye bolts. The pulley system I tried had it slung too low.
