We did a lot of hiking on the fringes of the BWCA this weekend for only a couple of birds. There was moose sign everywhere we hiked which is encouraging.

I think they are still at the low end of their population cycle. I heard little to no drumming this year on my land just outside of Superior National Forest.

I have seen plenty around the Two Harbors area. And was lucky enough to bag a couple this afternoon... First 2 this season.

Reports around Ely area from Conservation officer checks it is really slow and bear guides are seeing very few.
It has been hot so it should get some better.
We should be bouncing up from the down cycle by now.

Anyupdates?

I am hearing very few ruff grouse anywhere except by Bigfork which it has been fair.

Guys staying where we are in Grand Marais said it's been very slow up the Gunflint Trail this week. I talked to someone when we were at Children's with our daughter last week that said her husband's group got some but not many around the Sawbill Trail, Grade, Caribou Trail area.

My nephew has been around the edges of the BWCA and been doing good on Spruce Grouse, but hardly seeing a ruff grouse. Most of the birds are young birds. No moose seen yet.

Spent a lot of time in the woods this last weekend prepping for deer hunting and didn't see or hear a single grouse while in the woods. This was over in the Bemidji area so not the Gunflint but it was very odd not seeing or hearing any.

Finally saw our first grouse on the way home, it was sitting on the side of the road in front of the neighbors cabin.

That is what I like about hunting the area where you were. I have seen moose, bear, and wolves while hunting grouse.
Years ago while walking a trail, looed about 35 yards ahead of me,coming my way was a wolf, all of a sudden he gets a grouse up and it lands in a tree next to me. I let that grouse live.

Thanks for the report. All ruff grouse or a few spruce? More than one day hunting? Been slow for most.

I hunt down by Longville a lot and grouse are lowest in 25 years at least.

I agree grouse have been real low lately, but last Monday, with the day off work, I went out dogless and flushed 20+. I think there was a break in the wind and I caught the birds out feeding. Only problem was that I shot too many trees.
