I’m packing in my fly rod this time. I figure the smallie action will be there for us but I’m unsure about old marble eyes on the fly. I hate sink tip and will stay with my bass taper fly line on a 7 weight rod. I’m assuming the walleye we find will be fairly shallow in mid June. Would you use a longer leader and maybe a small splitshot to get the fly down quickly? Cast, sink, strip back slowly…repeat.
Conehead or barbell topped flies will help too- I'm not sure how much of a purist you are, but I even seen flies behind small spinners on the leader. You can buy clevises and spinners at dang near any Gander Mountain, Cabela's, Sportsman's wharehouse, Thorne Bros., Fleet Farm, or Joe's in St. Paul. There's also a lead-free putty available that has worked well for me. You just stick it on the line. It can be messy, but you don't run the risk of damaging the local wildlife.
Best of luck. I've yet to catch a wally on the fly, but I've also never specifically tried.
This one was caught in 6 feet of water at about 10pm. I was targeting the bass who were surfacing everywhere, but the fly I was using (some kind of white streamer with red and green accents) seemed to only catch walleye. This one measured 23" and was released.
