This year’s trip consists of my brother and I planning on being in for 7 days. We’re open to suggestions from would-be additions to our group, but are thinking about setting up base on Insula. One other thought is heading up to Toe Lake. We target walleye, but any fish that would like to see what it’s like to be out of the water on the end of our fishing line is always welcome. We’ve been tripping to the BW for over 30 years, and are always open to ideas for lakes offering good fishing as well as new lakes that may hold good numbers of fish. We’re also open to suggestions of lakes that we may have fished and not done so well for whatever reason, always willing to try new techniques or tactics.
Needless to say, we have equipment and a canoe. There are times that my brother may not want to fish, especially if we have enough to eat for that day, but if I’m not catching fish, and the weather is good, I like to be away from camp exploring. We both like day trips to visit lakes outside base camp, especially if we’ve not fished them or simply to see new scenery.
We're planning on Memorial Day 2016-give or take a week.
If anyone is interested in going, please feel free to reply to this thread.
If you'd rather discuss off this thread, email to: menenmon@wowway.com

I have always gone fishing in the fall and never had much luck. When you go to the BWCA in the spring, do you typically do well and would you consider yourself an expert fisherman? I am looking for someone who could get me on fish so I can figure out how to catch them. I've always been interested in meeting up with total strangers just for the fun of it but haven't been able to pull the trigger yet.

I am looking for a place to go in may also. I went on my first joint solo last year. I am kinda looking for some place on the west side

The island campsite at the north end of Insula is pretty nice and has some size. There is lots to explore and with the river near by access to Alice and Fishdance are clear options. I am a lousy fisherman, but have never been skunked during trips that time of year.
My plans are still very much up in the air and I would be doing a solo, but would love to stop by and hang around a night or so if that works out.

Hello Prizes,
Not sure if I'd consider ourselves expert fisherman, but in all the years that we've been to the BW/Q, we've never been skunked, nor would we have starved lol.
This years' trip we're planning on going to Insula.
We're hoping to have 2 or more join, but solo's are always welcome.

Thanks Bhouse46-
We'll likely take you up on your suggestion-there should be plenty of time to get away from camp while not fishing.
Maybe we'll cross paths while we're up there and by all means, stop by for a drink, some good convo, and maybe stay a night or two?

Hey Plumbob-
You're welcome to join us? We plan on base-camping and going from there. We haven't fished Insula yet, but it seems like a pretty large body of water and will likely take us all week to cover it before venturing for a day trip, but who knows?

Hmmm... That sounds interesting to me. I tripped with plumbob last year he is a good guy. I may have to look at the calendar. Pete

I'll be going in around that time but usually catch a tow up to PP and on to the Q. Ice-out fishing at that time can get interesting with cool/cold nights and warm days. I may try to reprise my Kahsh-Agnes route that I only partially did or head into Sarah/Mac.

It looks like Insula is going to be the target this year.
If there is a group with even numbers that would like to join, feel free to reply to this thread or to the email in the top message.
One reason for wanting an even number is that the gear will be paired and lessened considerably. This will make the portages easier, and less packs to carry.
We're hoping to pair up with experienced fisher people so as to cover more water, leaving more time for relaxing. Even if those interested aren't experienced, but their focus is on fishing and having fun, it will still be a nice experience to be had.
We should have our dates figured out in the next month or so.
Thanks to all that replied and we'll see you in the BW!

Hey PB-
Although we're still poking at finding a walleye predominant lake, our timeframe may get pushed back to June.
Also, the time that we're to be in the woods may be shortened by a couple days (5) in the woods and a day in and a day out.
We're hoping to have all the issues straightened out soon.
Is there a possibility of you being able to do the first week of June? If so, will you be able to find an additional person to go?

O.k. dates & destinations are set:
Heading in on Saturday June, 4th - Lake One for a destination at Lake Three. We figure it'll take all week to cover Lake Three, but may be open to a day trip to Lake Four, Horseshoe, or another nearby lake that is said to have decent walleye fishing.
If there's an even number of people that would like to join my brother and I, feel free to reply here, or contact me via email. If there are only solo's that wish to meet up, I'm sure there'll be a spot for a tent at the camp site, and you're welcome to stay as long as you like. There'll be plenty of conversation to be had (when we're not out catching fish of course).

After thorough consideration, our trip has been (re)confirmed to the Gunflint area. We're now heading up to the Pine Lake area (Johnson Falls) Entering on June 4th through 11th. If there are others in that area during that time, maybe we could share some productive spots on the water, swap stories and share informative fishing facts. Hope to see some of the forum readers up there! Good luck this year.
