I'm guessing you are talking about the bill of the hat? The really cheap ones are thin canvas sewn over cardboard. The better ones are canvas over plastic. Some hats are simply layered canvas. Some may be canvas over felt. Others may know more.

Yes, I'm talking about the bill.

If it is cardboard it'd better be pretty good cardboard or one rain will take it out.

Yup, as usual PK you are correct. Even the cardboard core ones make it through a few rain storms.

My wife uses something she calls plastic canvas for craft projects. It's simply a fine mesh of stiff plastic that yarn on a needle can pass through. It's available at sewing or craft stores. I would think that would work.
