When I was about 14 years old, my aunt, uncle and cousin invited me to go with them on a two-week adventure to Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. We ferried a motorboat to the island on the Ranger III ferry and we were able to explore nearly every part of the eastern half of the island.

My uncle, then a Lutheran minister, who retired several years later and passed away a little over a year ago, always made such a spiritual impact on me. There are so many positive things I remember about him.

In 2003, when our Boy Scout Troop started doing high adventure trips, I organized a backpacking trip to Isle Royale. It would be the first time I had been back since 1974. I mailed a hand-written card to my aunt and uncle thanking them for taking me way back when and to let them know that after 29 years, I was finally returning.

I received a wonderful response in the mail shortly after we returned home, and it had this bible verse written inside... it has stuck with me every since and will forever. I thought it was the perfect verse considering that I was leading a group of young Boy Scouts. I think of it before canoe trips, before vacation, going into a big meeting at work, anything where I need God's guiding hand. Knowing that He is always there is quite comforting.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Amen to that! Great verse Pete! One of my favorites is Isaiah 41: 10. Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand!
