I just bought a Garmin 64st and have never used a gps besides my cell phone. Does any one have any tips or tricks? Maps they like or dislike? I see the topo it comes with has bwca camps and portages on it. Is there a better source to use? Also I was told the 64st came with lake depths on it. Is that false because no contours show up when I turn on fishing under marine. Thanks for any help I want to try and get familiar with the unit before my first trip of year in mid may.-Hunter

It should have a world base map, and 100k US topo map. Lake depth charts would be extra. I do not currently own a Garmin but if you go to the settings page and choose maps I think a list will display the maps available on the unit and allow enabling/disabling.
I'm not up to date with lake depth charts, other members will suggest good sources.
Basecamp is the software mapping program for your computer, and managing maps and transfers.
Gps File Depot is a great source for shareware maps.
The Garmin maps are very good but pricey. A Birdseye Topo subscription looks like a great option. I use a similar subscription from Delorme for the units I currently own.
One of the best map features on the newer Garmin's is the ability to overlay maps and display features of several at the same time.
Sit down with the manual and some spare time. Geocaching is a very good way to learn it's functions.
Have fun with it!

Thanks butthead. The manual is not as helpful as I would have thought. Doing some geocaching is a good idea I'll have to do that.I saw Garmin has a bwca download for 100.00 but other than lake depths I wonder how different it is from the campsites and portage that the 100k topo shows already. It also came with one year free birds eye satellite view I need to download.

If any one has lake depth download suggestions that would be great otherwise maybe I'll make a post in fishing in a few days.
