I'll be taking Booker on my solo this summer. He doesn't like getting wet other than wading. He hates the rain. I'm going for a whole week and am sure it will rain. I'd like a rain cover of some sort for him to keep him happier as well as to keep down the wet dog smell. He has a double coat and takes a long time to dry.

Has anyone used something to keep dogs dry on the rain? I think I've seen a pic of someone using a poncho while in the canoe...it'd be nice to have something that he could wear while portaging, too, if possible, that wouldn't just get ripped up.

My dog loves swimming but doesn't really like the rain either. One cool fall day it started raining as I was paddling out, and I tossed a short canvas jacket I had over my dogs shoulders. He was sitting right in front of me, and it did a good job of keeping him dry(er). It occurred to me I should look for some sort of jacket from a second hand place and modify it: take the sleeves off, maybe trim/angle the bottom a bit, and possibly add a Velcro tab in front to help hold it in place. I haven't done it yet, but still plan to. Imperfect, but would help on cold, wet paddling or fall hunting trips. Just an idea for you.

I think it was Lynn (VNO) that posted a pic of a trip mates dog wearing a poncho a couple/few years ago.???

Echo doesn't like to swim (weird for a lab) but he doesn't mind getting wet. On my fall solo a couple of years ago he didn't want to stay under the tarp with me while it was raining and the poor guy was shivering that night in the tent.

The look says it all.

About 1/2 hour after the first pic. Not a happy camper.

Great pics TomT,

I find it so funny that my dog loves swimming more than anything else, but if I try to bathe or give her a shower, she looks like your dog in the pics.

Mines like that too. She loves to swim but not a fan of rain or baths.

Here's a doggy rain jacket that might work. Rain coat

A very familiar look!

"how could you do this to me???" or "you're dead to me now."

Too funny, Gunter does that look too! My lab is more tolerant, but still not a fan.

It's funny how they can tell you their mood instantly with the eyes and posture. They don't complain like people though, so THAT'S good! :)

When my pup is portaging she is so happy she actually smiles.

To answer the OP Took me a bit to remember the name but check out Hurtta.

Have never bought any dog gear from them but have looked a few times, nice looking stuff. Looks to fit herders esp.

If nothing else they have a cool youtube channel with sheep dogs and heelers running around.

So far I just put a tarp (or my rain jacket) on the dog in the canoe. Portages we hope the trees slow the rain some. My heeler is already wearing a life jacket so another coat seems impractical. The lab has a neoprene vest I put her in sometimes as a brushguard/flotation aid/warm layer, have meant to put it on the heeler at home to see if that helps with rain.

when my puppy was about five months he came on a bwca backpack trip in november. the weather was frightful, wet snow/rain mix. milo was acting like a baby, he is from northern wisconsin but that is no excuse. now nothing bothers him.
