from little sag you could head west to elton, makwa, pan, anit, kivaniva, kawishiwi river, river lake, fishdance side trip, alice, insula, hudson, lake 4, 2, 1, gabbro, little gabbro, bruin, to south kawishiwi and to your car. that's a long solo trip, Pete!

Mark-
It sounds like you are heading out solo from Little Sag . . .?
There would be several ways to get from Little Sag to Alice to the Number Lakes to exit on South Kawishiwi River depending on time available and other desires. I can't remember what areas you have and have not been to in there.
You could get to Alice through Fraser and Thomas or from Kawishiwi River which you could get to in various ways. Most direct would be down to Makwa, then the decision is whether to head to Ledge or south to Malberg.
If Ledge, then you have the choice of going west to Fraser/Thomas or south through Adams to Kawishiwi Lake.
Steve and I went up from Malberg to Little Sag in 2014 (see our trip reports) and down to exit at Sawbill.
I went up to Adams in 2013 (see trip report). It is really nice if you have not been there. I also went down to Amber then too.
Of course you could also get to Malberg more indirectly by going from Little Sag to Mesaba and across the Louse River.
Where are you coming out of Hairy and how do you plan to get to Little Sag?

quote Mocha: "can't you head north from One and then west and south on the kawishiwi to Gabbro?
i'm just looking at a map and also had heard that news about the portage to clearwater."
Yup. No need to go into Gabbro - East and South, past dams 1 and 2, and to EP 32. Nice route.

There is/was a portage but I'm advised by Outfitters and rangers to not try it. Unmaintained since the Pagami Creek fire. I was really tempted but the warnings were strong against it.

another idea would be to not travel to little sag but take the portage to HUB and then do the Louse river to mahlberg and the kawishiwi. at that point you could decide to head north through trapline, beaver adams boulder and then west OR from kawishiwi head south to fishdance for pictos side trip, alice, insula....
