They are talking cooler weather and rain this week otherwise I think a camp fire ban is only days away. Rain can change that this week.

Another reason many Ontario fire fighters and resouces are heading to Alberta.

Sounds like a campfire ban. Like I said the firefighters are stretched thin already>

Good call on their part. Place could burn a good while with all the resources deployed in Alberta.
05/09/2016 05:11PM
I remember some dry springs,we would gather firewood and moisture content was in the single digits. You hardly get the match close to your firewood and it would ignite and it would be a hot fire.
Like I said good call with limited fire fighting resources available.
Couple weeks and greenup, maybe fire season will be over. See they are talking even a inch of snow by Ely next week.

I concur. With the situation the way it is now, better to be a little extra cautious.

I don't see the fire ban still listed on the Quetico Park website anymore. Anybody else agree it appears to have been lifted?

On the Ontario Forest Fire Info map, it shows restrictions in a VERY large area, including Quetico.

Yeah I see the red fire ban icon under the alerts, but a couple days ago, there was a few lines of text to the side of it explaining the ban, but now the text is gone.

Solo trips I have taken it and cut up the trout and put it in instant chicken soup. Tastes great and easy-just boil.

Just got off the phone with Canoe Canada. They said there is a meeting this coming Friday to discuss whether to lift the ban or not. Hope they do, I'm going in June 5. Really like my campfire at night, not to cook on, just to stare into.

Figures. I'm going in a day before the meeting. The ban could be lifted and I spend my whole trip thinking there's a fire ban on. That kind of stinks.

I just got a call from Quetico about the fire ban. My permit is for Saturday, so I imagine they're calling everyone. Just making sure that I knew that the ban is in place and probably will be through next week. Have to have a stove for cooking (well, yeah). She reinforced its for open burning and campfires, so I think candles would be okay.

I have to say this fire ban is really disappointing. Were going in Monday and not having a campfire really lessens camping for me. I guess I can unpack the biscuits and gravy as well. Back to pancakes.

Ditto on the call, just got it. Gonna be pretty breezy Sunday (when I enter) on the tail end of this dry spell so I doubt it will be lifted before we enter. Gonna pack the saw/hatchet/reflector oven/baking mixes/etc in the car in the unlikely event it's lifted before we enter but not counting on it.
05/18/2016 01:45PM
10 days out talking very little rain and the Alberta fire still going. I think the ban will be on for a little while. Who knows?

I feel your pain BnD! We r headed in on Monday also. Where are u entering? You can still do B+G just have to pan fry your biscuits.

We talk about what can be used in Quetico during fire ban such as propane stoves which were allowed in the past. But where does it say now what can be allowed? Maybe zero fires of all kind?

Why doesn't it say what is allowed? Not sure now?

Fireban Details: Quetico Provincial Park Interior and Dawson Trail Campground is under a Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) until further notice. NO fires for any purpose will be permitted at any time during the RFZ throughout Quetico's Interior and at Dawson Trail Campground.
Boil Water Details: - No additional details at this time.

If that doesn't cover it, then you might want to read the Outdoor Fire Restrictions page from the Ontario Government web page. It indicates that campstoves can (under normal restrictions) be used, but it should have a control valve for stopping the flow of fuel to the stove. It also includes other provisions, like not using a stove with 1 meter of any flammable material.

Just received this from the park.

Thanks for your email. You can use your propane stove, or any portable gas, propane or naphtha stove anytime during the fire season, even in a Restricted Fire Zone, provided the stove is at least 1 metre from any flammable material. The stove must also be designed to use gas, propane or naphtha and you must be able to extinguish the flame by a control valve or by closing the stove.

Thanks for that. This type of information, or at least a direct link to it, should be made readily available on every fire restriction announcement page. There are almost too many places to look for the information, sometimes with conflicting messages.

Just got back from Quetico and the word is it is super dry up there and talking to the Ranger at Prairie Portage he does not see any change unless the whole region or all of Quetico gets any rain.
Good news mosquitoes are non existent, Black flies are moderate.
The last two days temps in Quetico have ranged from 82 degrees to almost 90 degrees for a while. Very windy today drying things out more.

I got a call yesterday from the Park and was advised the ban is still on :(

No huge deal, but it might make me bring a white gas stove instead of relying on a fire and the JetBoil all week. I'm going in late next week.

Looks like several of the reporting stations that flank Quetico (e.g., Crane Lake, Ely, Atikokan) are reporting rainfall levels generally less than .20 inches. Hopefully, the mid-week forecast will hold (.50 inches over Tuesday and Wednesday). That's probably not going to do much to create conditions which will cause the fire ban to be lifted, but at least its a step in the right direction.

If the "Q" fire ban is not over by the end of the month (or buy end business day Tuesday)-- I will be mildly surprised. If it's not over a week from now-- I will be shocked. Plenty of moisture coming North.

Total rainfall listed by Weather underground almanac for Ely the last few days is way under a 0.5 inches.
Does look like that as Whitewolf says more rain coming.
05/29/2016 10:52AM
all this moisture streaming by has been a fizzle here in S. central wi. If you would have watched radar the last few days, you would have sworn we received 4 inches of rain. We barely got the sidewalk wet 3-4 times. I hope it has had more punch to it in N. Mn and the Q.....but it doesn't sound like it has.
05/29/2016 11:15PM
Yesterday Atikoken got less than 0.1 inches so rain is not falling in many places yet.

The fire ban post from the link above is as follows:

"Quetico Provincial Park Interior and Dawson Trail Campground is under a Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ). The Restricted Fire Zone will be lifted on Tuesday May 30. NO fires for any purpose will be permitted during the RFZ throughout Quetico's Interior and at Dawson Trail Campground."

The post seemingly contradicts itself. Furthermore, Tuesday is May 31 (not May 30).

No contradiction at all. The Ontario province people lifted the ban for much of Ontario in that certain zone. Within that zone is Quetico park who can decide to lift the ban or not. The park has not said yet.
They can lift it now if they want. The other ban from the Province I am sure would supercede anything.

NOTICE: As of May 7th, 2016, Quetico Provincial Park Interior and Dawson Trail Campground are under a Restricted Fire Zone. No fires will be permitted for any purpose until the RFZ is lifted.
