Hey guys,

Thanks always for being great responders to my myriad questions!

Question of the day is: How do you keep your kids entertained in the BWCA?

MiniMN is an only child - so she doesn't have other kids to play with, so sometimes she gets bored out in the BWCA. What types of things do you do with your kids - or bring for your kids to keep them entertained, and having fun with the BWCA?

Thanks!

lots of swimming.. lots of it.. beach sights.. and little cliff jumping sights (like 4-5 feet tall) and lots of fishing. We also build boats out of nature to see who's will float the furtherest and we teach them how to use a jack-knife so they can widdle. Also they can be in charge of the fire.. getting wood, getting tinder, and starting it and keeping it going

Moleskin journals and water color pencils were a real hit on our last trip. They only come out during trips so the kids have an ongoing log to keep as well.

Help. It's another set of hands when I am with one of my kids in the BWCA. After camp is set, we play. Swim, collect wood, explore. We bring books if we have day time down time but usually that is kept for night time.

We move every day. If you don't, taking day trips to explore is a good mix. I also think it's good for them to play on their own. Float sticks, skip stones.

+1 on journaling as well.

Fish, plant id, tree id, teach camp skills, cardinal directions, allow them to decide daily plans etc. Just got back from my kids first trip and they had 0 trouble keeping entertained granted there were two of them. But mom and I would take turns doing things with them one on one. Good luck and have fun.

While we do allow our daughter to bring a few (non-electronic) toys, she amazes us with how she can find seemingly ordinary things to keep her occupied & entertained.
This little chunk of wood (which she called her hammer).

Dependent on the season, searching for wildflowers is always a fun activity.

Of course finding some sand always necessitates a lengthy stop.

A few other ideas.....
