Mayflies are starting to hatch as well as several stoneflies. The common house fly and horesfly made an entrance this past week. I actually welcome nightfall so that only the "usual" mosquito visitors were there to contend with. With wind and some cool overnight temperatures came relief :)

I was in the SW part of the park through the 19th. I was truly amazed at the absence of insect populations during my 2 week trip. Mosquitoes were virtually non-existent during most of the trip and were only bothersome of a few swampy portage landings during later stages of the trip. I saw ONE tick, and it wasn't on me. There were a few black flies and horse flies, but they weren't overly aggressive. Gnats were present throughout the trip, but weren't developing into a nuisance until the last couple of days.
For the record ... this is the lowest presence of insects I witnessed for any May/June trip I've taken (which is well over a dozen).

Sincerely moosehopper"
Did we bump into you and your son at the mismarked Quetico Lake portage??
