I've never been to Argo. How popular is it? Will there be lots of people there in August?

It is a popular lake. I would expect in August you would likely see 2-3 other groups there. Or perhaps none if you are lucky.

I can only tell you my experience. We were there in late August one time and there were two other groups at sites in the middle of the lake.

Not specifically about Argo, but I camped on Roland last week and was within ear shot of the short portage between Roland and Argo. I did a layover day there and in roughly a 24 hour span there were at least 5 groups (some with multiple canoes) that came across that portage. (Of course I can't say if they stopped on Argo or not.)

Only been once in August, I think I saw 1-2 groups camping on Argo.

Usually go in June and see a couple of groups camping on Argo. Several canoes cruise through each day, but the lake is large enough to handle multiple groups.

Argo has my vote for the prettiest lake in the Quetico.

Seems to get attention on here lately. Guess it will be popular this August from reading different recent posts.
Been there twice. Late May. Once on day trip. Saw camps two groups of two camps/canoes once and three tandems alone and seperate times and one solo. It is a big lake though. I would not expect to be alone. It is clear and deep.

Thanks for the advice. I will check it out someday, if not on this trip then on another trip.

Last time I went in August every decent camp was taken probably 6-7 groups camped on the lake and a several more passing through each day.

It is decent sized lake and I did not feel crowded, but busy by Q standards.

I have also been on it and seen no one in August--so it varies.

Thank timatkn, good to hear about your experience. If I was able to go to the Q more often, I wouldn't mind taking my chances but I only get to the Q for a limited time each summer so the possibility of a lake having 6-7 groups kind of puts me off. I will visit Argo but, maybe some other time of the year.

Articles in a certain magazine has made it much more popular.
