Doing an early Sept trip via Quetico River and Namakan River. Would appreciate any feedback on portage conditions, river water depths and Wolseley fishing (base camping on Wolseley for three days). Haven't run across any trip reports for this stretch, so I'm guessing this route doesn't see much activity. Any oddities / points of interest? Where is the take-out at LLC? Anyone take out at Flanders bridge instead?

I have no real info but offer, but since you opened the guessing door...I bet you'll find many First Nation "improvements" in that area, like you do in Beaverhouse and western Quetico Lake and should be prepared for that. There is a FN dock/marina at the village on LLC.

I was thinking of doing this same trip solo, Beaverhouse to Wosley. Did you ever do it? Anything you could tell me that would help me? Did you see any people? Any sign of people? Campsites? Portage info? Fishing? Hope your trip was great. Thanks and hope to hear from you

I have fished on Wolseley. flew into the Namakan, picked up an aluminum canoe, and then base camped on the island site. It definitely has "improvements", the sanitation system not one of them. Every day there were two motor boats with Indian guides puttering about, I think fishing for lake trout with guests from a lodge. We were there in May and the black flies were brutal. We were a little early for smallies and a little late for pike. The smallies did pick up at the end of our week when the water warmed up and I think it could be really good if you hit the temps right. I would think there are better solo trips though.

Should have filed a trip report, but inertia struck...
Yes, we did this trip last September (week after Labor Day). Once we got out of the Beaverhouse put-in area, we didn't see another canoe for 4 or 5 hours - crossed paths with a couple on a portage around one of the rapids about 3/4 of the way down the Quetico River. First day made it all the way down to the Namakan River. Actually ran a couple of small rapids on the Quetico, although we had to backtrack on one, as it was beginning to get a bit too adventurous for us. Didn't see another canoe for the rest of the trip. Camped on a point where the Quetico meets the Namakan - not much of a campsite, but it was adequate for one night. Not a lot of campsite options along Quetico River. Next morning we were greeted with a couple of fishing boats motoring upstream. Paddled against the slight Namakan current until we reached Wolseley (portage was a bit obscured, but it is correctly marked on Fisher maps). Once on Wolseley, evidence of guide abuse was present. However, we weren't about to let that ruin our trip. We camped at what appeared to be an island guide campsite, with a canoe secured to a tree on the island and fire grates strewn about. Only one plane touched down to pick up a party at another island site. We were unaware that there was anyone else on the lake up until that point, but they were gone within the hour and it was quiet for the next couple days. Base camped there with some good walleye and largemouth (yes, largemouth) action off the north side of our campsite. After four nights on Wolesley, we paddled upstream until we reached Ivy Falls, where we spent two nights on the island campsite. It's a raised island with obvious signs of use, but it was one of the best ones we've ever found. Beautiful vista view of the Namakan. All amenities there, including a large garter snake (that eventually swam away). Great fishing below the falls. Saw a large otter (or beaver, as it was off a distance) frolicking in the river. The last leg of the journey was over some swift water, and a couple of portages that got us to LLC. This was actually a nice deviation from our typical lake-to-lake-to-lake Quetico trips, so it was memorable for that reason. Portages were a breeze - nothing particularly difficult. Weather and fish were cooperative. Thankfully, we didn't experience what JH described in his May trip. YMMV
