Faced the reality, Delorme is dropping support for mapping programs and GPS units (Inreach will be a stand alone product, joint Garmin/Delorme). Purchased a replacement for the 62st I sold to Greg N. 2 years ago.
Not really a fresh start because I have all the programs and maps I set it up with.

Feels more the opposite Gary. Like I am joining mainstream GPS usage.
Anyhow after side by side comparisons and use of both GPS62st and PN60, I found the units very similar in performance and abilities. But for me the big thing is accompanying mapping software programming. Stayed with the PN60 for that reason,. Which is a moot point now that Delorme is dropping support for it's programs and online map/imaging service. As of 2017 the only consumer game will be Garmin, Basecamp and Birdseye subscriptions. Will see if any influence from Delorme filters into those products.

Delorme never was a large company. Primarily North American centric. Purchased by an international (Garmin), I feel primarily to assimilate the excellent sat-tracking-messaging system. From what I have learned/heard Delorme will continue with Inreach, published maps and atlases, and navigation apps.
GPS units, mapping programs, and attendant support are being discontinued in 2017.
While the smartphone nav apps are very good, I do not think they will replace dedicated handhelds until issues with battery life and ruggedization are dealt with.

I have to agree with you on that phone app GPS will never replace a handheld GPS. The one I have will stayed powered for 18 hours, (if you don't use the backlight). My Garmin is also very rugged comparing it to my thin fragile iPhone. I can just watch the battery meter go down on my phone when I'm in a GPS app.

Just like my iPhone 6s, my Garmin 62st is one of those units that is no longer the latest out there but is still the best. There is no dark side, just a lot of fun using them as trip diaries.

Nice thing, I saved all maps and info from the first one. 5.7 gb file transfer to a fresh chip and all info is loaded and ready to go. 1/2 hour total time lapse!
