I just returned from my first Quetico trip going out of Beaverhouse. I had a great trip!
However, when I returned to my vehicle (parked in the Beaverhouse entry parking area) I realized that someone had broken into my vehicle and stolen all of the the cash out of my wallet. Not the best way to end a trip.
Before I left my vehicle, I made sure that it was locked and I hid the key under my car. Apparently, I did not hide the key well enough. Someone obviously found my hidden key and went through my vehicle looking for cash.
I know that I should have probably taken the key with me and not left cash in my vehicle. Next time I will make sure that I don't leave anything of value in my car and take my keys with me.
I guess these were "considerate" thieves, because they left my wallet and credit cards.
I just wanted to make everyone aware that someone is looking for hidden car keys at the entry point.

Hopefully they didn't take the time to write down your credit card numbers with expiration dates and three digit security codes off the back, with plans to do a little on line shopping later. I'd be watching my credit card bills pretty closely for a little while.

Sorry to hear that Matt. After Stanton Bay, Beaverhouse is our favorite put-in/take-out. Thankfully, we don't hear about these types of incidents much. Hopefully an isolated event and not a trend. Good idea to be diligent about the credit card usage.
Don't let this spoil your tripping experience.

I put my keys, wallet, cash, etc. in a waterproof bag that stays in the very bottom of my pack until I exit.
I would notify your credit card companies to put a fraud alert watch on your cards. You should be proactive and they will be very helpful.
I hope that all turns out well.

I would just get rid of those cards and ask for new credit card numbers. You never know when they may try to use those number then you don't have to worry about them.

It's a bit of a pain in the rear end, but it's the best advice.

Actually not that hard to do. I just called them up when mine was possibly compromised and asked for a new one. Got it in about 4 days.

Matt - sorry to hear about your incident. I have never had any issues in the BH parking lot in over 30 years. But times change and new faces show up. The remote nature of this location is an invitation to unlawful activity. But the remoteness also makes it safer than those areas near civilization. What thief would make that drive?

Maybe someone already there going or returning from canoeing.

OldFingers - yes - my first instinct reaction was a new driver for an outfitter. Honestly - not sure why that popped into my mind. But the more I thought about it, it did seemed plausible.
I have never had any bad experiences with outfitters, so that is not the issue. But outfitters usually hire young kids for the summer and they usually get the "less attractive" and boring tasks as the newbie on the payroll. And shuttle driver is among them.
They would be in and out quickly and would be very familiar with the area after a few shuttle trips.
Enough speculation. Just sad to hear of Matt's misfortune in such a great destination.
Hope it was reported so the culprit will not have "free reign" to continue.
