Longish story but someone at work purchased this print 20x30 but the tone wasn't a perfect match to a smaller version of the same print. Contacted the printer, Bay Photo, and the printed a replacement at no cost. The replacement was identical to the first one, talked to Bay Photo again and they were willing to try again but the large format printer is different than the small and it's difficult to match exactly. Had the large and small photos not been hung on the same wall a foot away from each other you would never notice the difference. So ultimately the guy who purchased the print was happy and I got to keep the spare. :). It's printed on aluminum.

Red,
I have been thinking of trying some of my photos on aluminum - would you recommend it? How do they look as far as sharpness and colors?

Thanks,

Jeff

I love them. I also had a color image printed and I think they give a lot of "pop" if you will. Sharpness and saturation were both excellent in my opinion. I got the mid-gloss option on my prints and I'm very happy with them.

I had this image printed and it looks pretty much exactly like the image on the monitor.

I love prints. I switched to digital just ~2 years ago having continued with large format film longer than most, partly because the prints were superior. Now I have a 42 MP full frame camera and an Epson 3880 printer and can make pretty good prints. Not quite like prints from 8x10 B&W negatives but I am happy with them.

But aluminum prints are better. I have used Magnachrome for aluminum prints with their "white gloss" finish which looks the most traditionally photographic. They are expensive but require no matting and framing beyond the cost of the print ordered. They prints come ready to hang, are archival, and durable. The resolution, contrast, detail, etc are all outstanding. Of course, you have to submit a good file to get a good print.

My advice is to start with a small, 8x10 aluminum print with one of your own files to get an idea. I picked a file that had fine shadow detail, fine highlight detail, and a more extreme color range with some whites to get an idea of what to expect. You should definitely give it a try. The rate limiter is the cost of admission though.

I should have mentioned that the nice color print above is a good example of metal prints (to the extent you can tell from an internet JPG) of the rendering of highlights, shadow detail, contrast and saturation on the metal print.
