Just finished this book, it was very good.
If you liked the book and movie about Chris McCandless.
Into the Wild, this book tells the rest of the story. "What drove Chris to forsake his family" and ultimately die in a bus near Denali NP. It is written by Chris McCandless sister Carine.

Thanks. The truth seems pretty terrible.

so I guess you take the sisters word for it

Watching Beav's Alaska adventure got me interested in seeking out books on Alaska, it was surprising enough that the original book is grouped where it is, this one even more so. I stumbled upon it earlier this fall but passed on it both because I knew I'd be as conflicted about it as the original, plus I was too busy to read.

It was -20F out this weekend.

One thing is for sure, the family is screwed up. Alcohol will do that,
A Gen X'er blaming their parents, and not taking responsibility for themself, never seen that before.
Plenty of kids have gone off traveling trying to find themselves and figure out what they want to do with their life. The only thing different about this is that the kid blundered and got in over his head, and died, end of story.
I've known plenty of people whose parents were alkies (including wife and father), and plenty had parents who had affairs and split families, and plenty who suffered far worse emotional and physical abuse. Most of them vow to be better parents, knowing their own parents failings.
I guess it took the girl two failed marriages to figure that out. End of story.
