Where can you find this stuff. Checked the local chain grocery store and they kind of looked at me crosseyed.

I buy mine at Costco. You can also make your own, it's clarified butter.

I get ours at Trader Joes either in Madison, WI, West Des Moines, IA or the Chicago area ones.

Melted butter sieved thru a few layers of cheesecloth. Easy and 1/2 the cost.

Look at Wal Mart too. As I saw it once at the Moline Wal Mart. It was not in with butter or margarine but usually in with the cooking oils or baking section.

I make my own with a 4 pack of organic, unsalted butter sticks. Easy. Find method on You Tube videos.
Shelf stable and healthy -- butter is rid of the artery-clogging stuff . Butter some toast or fry up some eggs and cook anything with it.
Store bought is expensive for my budget, anyway. If you make some don't get distracted by TV, email or bwca.com forum during the process. It's easy to overcook (burn) it at final step of process. Low flame/burner simmering from beginning to end of process.
I found some at our local WalMart also. $14 for a 12 oz. jar.

Thanks,I'm gonna look at wally world. $14.00, wow.. just had a stress test and arteries are good want to keep it that way. I'm gonna try to make my own also. I'll do a little more research . Do I use real bitter at margarine. What's the best kind of butter and what's the shelf life thanks again in advance

I passed a stress test before my trip last fall, but it wasn't very stressful. Was yours? I had a heart attack a month after my trip. It could have happened during the trip.

It's less than $5 at TJs for 8 ounces and that usually lasts me two trips - like 3-4 weeks. Is it really less expensive to buy butter and make it and bottle it yourself?

At $4 a pound locally, for me it is. But I like to putz around the kitchen making my own stuff. Best part is making just enough for my needs, as I cook at home I'm normally clarifying butter for many different recipes.

What I see is the difference between clarified butter and ghee is that ghee is simmered longer and ends up with a nuttier taste. Not sure if the extra simmering would increase the life of it being non refrigerated. What I read, it still needed refrigeration.

Boonie,the test was ok. Kind of hard because I have a fused right ankle and walking fast is not easy anyway. Just gonna try to eat and drink better. Doc wasn't to worried he just said during the period I had a monitor on ,my heart beat was 22% faster than a normal heart. And I think I'm a pretty low keyed guy he gave me something to slow it down some

My impression of a stress test before I went in was that they would put me on a treadmill and increase the grade and speed until I could no longer continue. That's what I expected, but what I got was considerably less than that. I never got my heart rate over 135 and was just walking along and conversing normally like I was shopping at the mall. 3 months later, one was blocked, one was 80% blocked, and I had a heart attack. So, if yours didn't push your heart very hard, I'd take it with a grain of salt.

Ben, you mentioned refrigeration which made me curious how many folks have had butter go bad when not refrigerated.
I keep butter out on the counter all the time without problem. And always take butter on camping trips, without cold storage. Have gone 2 weeks (moderate weather temps, 80 degrees or less), without noticing anything.

PS: After getting bored watching the rain freeze outside I did some research. 7 days at room temp came up often. More if covered (as is mine). So I and my family go thru it fast enough to keep a stick or 2 out all the time, replenished as needed. Ghee lasts longer because heating removes more water. References I found mentioned no ill effects from rancid as it is very noticeable in smell and taste, prompting immediate disposal.
I clarify butter mostly for sauces and roux, but have used it on trips. bh

I get mine at Trader Joes.

We cooked up a SMB in some ghee and it was AMAZING... but then we tried to sub the ghee for butter in kraft mac and cheese and it was not even edible....

I have found you need less clarified butter than regular by volume in mixes. Makes great muffins and brownies in JMO.

That's a good price but if I don't use 8 ounces a trip, doesn't make sense.
