Ogish Camp to Kek Camp
use track tool to draw freehand track camp to camp
open the track to bring up function tabs
convert to route, I selected 50 point for use, not auto
route shown in list column named track 003 1
renamed Ogish to Kek
the drawn track is still listed.

I have drawn maps this way before, works good. I now make my routes on my Touchscreen Montana. It's just as fast and easy as using Basecamp. You just tap the screen to drop a pin and then hit use, then tap another pin somewhere else and then hit use. It draws straight lines from point to point, not freehand like yours.

That's projecting or casting waypoints ahead to route. Done on a touch screen or with a cursor basically same process. It's what I do in the field regularly. I rarely make routes up ahead but several question about this popped up. Slow day at home had me goofing off with the program.

I haven't turned on my desktop in about a year, my laptop in 4 months. That is why I make routes this way. I'm going to need to try basecamp again. Does basecamp work in other countries? I just bought a chip for all of Europe for an upcoming trip. It would be cool to see my tracks after the trip.

Thanks, butthead. See, slow days are always good for something.

The Mac version of BC does not allow choosing the number of points along the converted route. At first, I thought that your choice of 50 points along a 7 mile track was a bit low and I set out to ask why not choose a larger number to smooth out the route even better? As it turns out, I tried a similar 7 mile track and it automatically choose to create only 43 segments along the route. Average segment: 860 ft vs your 739 ft. Seemed just a bit jagged, but certainly doable.

Then, I realized that it all depends on how much constant change of direction exists: a track I drew in an approximate circle with a 1 mile circumference wound up with a route divided into 31 segments... average segments: 170 ft.

Best part of your tutorial: I learned that your method of converting a track to a route is a lot faster than a point-by-point construction using the Route Creation Tool, which I had always believed would give more control over segments. As it turns out: with either method, you can always option-drag a point or mid-segment area of a route to modify or smooth it (in case you find yourself crashing into islands, let's say...)

Coming to BaseCamp with years of using Delorme topo (versions 4 thru 10), it falls into place pretty easy. Just got to look and find differently termed functions. And ya know I like to tinker with stuff!
