Has anyone taken this route recently? I'm wondering how the 200 rod portage from Beartrap Lake to the Beartrap River is, as well as the paddle and portages up the river to Sunday. We'll be up there in late July since that will likely affect water levels. If anyone has any info or tips on Sunday Lake, that would be greatly appreciated as well! Thanks in advance!

It's been years since we were there, but the portage was significantly shorter than 200 rods when we walked it, & wasn't in bad shape. I suspect people on Beartrap walk the portage at least occasionally, meaning it's in better repair that the balance of the route.
The portages on the river are faded, but pretty routine.

Sunday Lake is beautiful & you can feel the remoteness. The one obvious campsite is on the point on the north side of the lake. Envious!

I have crossed the Beartrap Lake to Beartrap river portage a few times. It is not terribly difficult but the only maintenance is done by paddlers so expect some blowdown to navigate.

There is a little flow to the river and a few spots where rapids, rocks make you get out and portage. The portages along the river are generally short, sometimes a bit of a challenge but not anything you can't handle.

The area along the river burned a few years ago but it has been regrowing-you will just be able to tell it had burned.

There is a decent spot to camp on Sunday on the north shore near the portage headed over to Sterling.

If you go to this trip report you will get some information from a past trip along with some photos

I did it about 3-4 years ago coming south out of iron, that 200 rodder had lots of downed trees but nothing really bad mostly just step overs. The old campsite on Sunday was nice good walleye fishing from camp. There were quite a few beaver dams below Sunday we had to pull over. Very enjoyable trip
