I'm leaving for a solo trip soon. I'm thinking about paddling from PP to Emerald, east to Plough and ultimately to Knife and then following it back to Carp/PP. I don't see many campsites on the Quetico side of Knife. I wonder find another loop. Any advice is appreciated.

You could go from Emerald through High Man over to That Man. Then do an up-and-back to Other Man. When you return to That Man, exit through Sheridan to Carp. You could also take a short cut from That Man through a small no-name lake back to Carp.
