Taken July 12, 2005 on Crooked Lake (in between Wednesday and Thursday Bay). This crazy bird know as the Gray Jay, or Campfire Thief, lived up to its name when it infiltrated our campsite with no fear! It stole a pita right out of my hand, and ate out of my mess kit (show here) as I was sitting right in front of it!

I'm pretty sure what you have here is infact a loon skull. I found a whole loon skeleton on an island some years ago and you'd be surprised how big their skulls are. Also, a Blue Heron has a yellow beak. Very cool find regardless what it is.

Nice one of the beaver! :)
I remember a solo trip once in the 80's on Sarah Lake where as I slept in my hammock I heard a beaver dragging branches near my site during the night. Every once in a while I'd get the big KER-PLUNK splash. :)

Thanks.
At the campsite on Gaskin Lake our tent was very close to the edge of a small cliff-like dropoff, and you could actually look out the tent window and see the water. There were two beavers who appeared to be beginning to build some sort of structure under the water, so they made many, many trips back and forth from somewhere on (or behind) the island offshore and this location. We watched them off and on for two days, as this was a layover day for us. It is the closest I have ever been to beavers working, and certainly the only time I have ever gotten to photograph them in good daylight. When I would hear them coming I would drop everything and go stand on the shore to watch in fascination. I have several nice photos, but this one is my favorite. I wish I had had my digital SLR back then.
It was great fun. Of our many trips, this one was probably the best.

"The movement of a canoe is like a reed in the wind. Silence is part of it, and the sounds of lapping water, bird songs, and wind in the trees. It is part of the medium through which it floats, the sky, the water, the shores. A man is part of his canoe, and therefore part of all it knows." Sigurd Olson "The Singing Wilderness"

Love that Pine Marten. I've seen two before, but never got the chance to take a pic. WW

Those toads are great. My wife and I camped on Birch Lake a few years ago, and there was this incessant noise we couldn't locate. We thought it was a branch in the breeze, or a bird we could not spot. We finally determined it was coming from under the tent. I lifted the pad up, and sure enough, there was a big frog huddled under the tent's footprint. We might have easily squashed it. Fortunately, we released it, for the most part unharmed.
