With a gift certificate that I had won, I decided to take a chance on this stove. On many of my trips, I only need to boil water for coffee, freeze dried meals, etc..., so the biggest factor for me when cooking is how much fuel to pack. My hope was for this stove to maximize fuel efficiency so I could bring less.

So after a number of trips now, I can say this stove has exceeded my expectations. It's remarkable how fast this thing will boil water. During heating, I don't even have time to fully open the food and coffee packets in preparation before the water is done; I now do that before igniting the stove. On a recent six day solo trip, heating a couple liters of water per day, I only went through 2 to 3 ounces of fuel.

The design of the system funnels the heat directly into the bottom of the pot and prevents wind from being a factor. It seems solidly built, but more time will tell. The pot is slightly larger than most 1 liter pots, but that can be desirable. It does pack a little on the large/heavy side as compared to typical compact backpacking stoves, but the stove and an 8 oz fuel canister do fit snug in the pot for transportation.

Pros: Very fast, Efficient, Unaffected by wind, Larger pot

Cons: Full ignition state sometimes slow, Packs a little on large side

I have used this system for the past two years and absolutely love it!!! I also have the 2.5L pot as well. I have used many backpacking stoves during my years as a Boy Scout / Leader and this is the top of the line IMHO. There is no need for a windscreen as the pot seats directly to the burner. It will boil water extremely quick and I find it to be very fuel efficient. I have been into the BWCA for up to six days with two people, and have used only two fuel canisters, but I always carry a 3rd just in case (Be Prepared). The pots pack up very nice and are very durable. They also clean up easy. A bit on the pricey side for the system that I use, but I feel it is well worth it. Those who have not seen / used this system have been impressed by it when they have had the opportunity to experience it. Make sure that you only use the MSR fuel when using this system.
