MSR DragonFly Backpacking Stove

this may be the greatest stove i have ever used. dual control valves allows it to go from flamethrower to a very gentle simmer. i know many people complain about how noisy the stove is, but as far as im concerned, that does not have as much of an impact on my decision as having a very reliable stove.

If you like to cook this is the stove for you! Most adjustable burner I have used, lowest simmer and highest heat of any stove in my experience. Used for years without a problem, or failure of the dreaded plastic pump. large pot support, very stable. Lightly browned pancakes to melting lots of snow, fast, this stove will do it!

I will add my two thumbs up to this stove also. I've had mine for about 10 years and have made many trips without major issues. My only problem was a clogged fuel filter and that was only doing what it was designed to do - stop the junk in my tank for clogging my stove. I contacted MSR Customer Support and talked to a real person, in English, and they sent me out a few filters the next day. Mine cooks up a large pot of spaghetti with as much ease as it simmers my Outback oven with some cinnamon rolls.

A real workhorse of a stove. Fast boil times, and simmers down t o a candle flame. Can be a bit noisy at full power, but gets the job done nicely. Packs down small to fit in your pack. A+++++

Have only used this a few times so far but am happy with it. So far it is the best lightweight camping stove I have encountered. Flame adaptability is a big issue for me and I am happy with the level of control this offers.


This stove requires a different fuel pump than other MSR stoves. This stove is quite loud when turned up. I would replace the windscreen included with something a little more durable.

I love this stove! I also have the Whisperlite and the Dragonfly with its flame adjustment heads and shoulders above it.


The stove is well built and if well maintained this stove will last years and the cost/benefit is worth every penny

I like how easy it is to adjust the flame on this stove, and I've used one for the past 10 years. Only complaint is the noise; it's like cooking on the deck of an aircraft carrier during takeoff.

In my opinion this stove is the best. Its performance is top notch and it packs up so small I store it in my cofee pot in my pack. Get one you will like it.

Purchased this one to replace my Coleman that would never work properly. I have been very happy with my Dragonfly. Used it in the BW as well as local camping. Super easy to pack, easy to set up and light. Good temperature control with the dual controls. If you use the wind screen, an appropriate size pot for your food and a tight fitting lid, you can boil water pretty quickly. Cools off quickly when shut down. Don't have to remove the fuel bottle cap for transport so it's one less thing to have to set up for use.


Downsides, if you forget to turn off the fuel bottle first and then turn off the stove, you will have some fuel drip when you disconnect the stove (but that's easy to fix with remembering what order to shut it down in).


As for the noise level, ya it is kinda loud, but if you use the right pot and lit and the windscreen, you don't have to have it on high for very long to boil water. If you have it on low, the noise is no worse than any other stove.


Definitely my favorite stove for any kind of camping!

I love the ability to control the flame on the Dragonfly. As has been pointed out, it does sound like a jet engine, As with all MSR stoves, it packs small and is built to last. Highly recommended.

Love this stove! My first stove was a MSR so when a similar heat adjustable model was available I was all over that. I love the rugged simplicity. This stove has yet to let me down. The design is so simple that field repair and maintenance are a breeze. Easy to pack and light weight.

This is my go-to canoe tripping stove.


Pros (compared to other liquid fuel stoves): fairly lightweight, packs down small, durable - mines been through everything and just keeps truckin', adjustable temperature control, easy to control gas usage, and can be used anywhere.


Cons: very loud, on the expensive side, and a little more complicated than canister stoves - only one or two real advantages to canister stove the biggest being the fine-tuned temperature adjustments.


Tip: two smaller bottles of fuel, instead of one large container, serve as a backup in case one is knocked over and spills.


All that said, I enjoy this stove the most when I'm canoe tripping in the wilderness!
