I have never fished Mack, but I remember talking to some old timers from Cook who used to fly in there in the 40’s and 50’s and caught huge Walleye. I wonder if it is still a good fishery?

Been through here twice, but never camped there. I am looking into stayin on Mack for a few days. I know the area was part of a big burn.
Are there any good campsites on Mack? We will be a party of 4, with one tent, and two hammocks. I am mostly interested in the Hammock hanging aspect of the site.
Any help is appreciated.

My crews have been to Mack Lake a couple of times. Nice area and remote. Camped on a peninsula once and on an island on the next lake south once.
Both times went up the Waiwag River from Kawnipi (be sure to pay attention or you will miss Mack Creek), and went down the string of portages and small lakes to Kenny Lake, a remote area you will enjoy.
This is one of the least traveled parts of the Quetico.

Thank you Eyedocron. I read on another post from you about your trip down to Kenny. That sounds amazing! Was it a tough slog through those creeds down to Kenny? How long did that take? Sounds really cool.

The most recent time through Mack, we started at Murdoch, just south of Kawnipi, walked and floated our canoes down the rapids into Kawnipi, paddled a couple of hours, then entered the Waiwag River. Almost missed Mack Creek, as it is small, walked the canoes up it and had a late lunch on the creek rocks just north of Mack Lake. We thought about camping on Mack, but only mid afternoon, so went one more portage to Munro and camped on a small island towards the east. What a storm that night. The wind flattened the tent onto us.
The next morning went down a wonderful stretch of small rapids and falls, narrow but paddleable creeks, modest untrampled portages, and wider but shallow areas full of ducks and moose. We made camp on the penninsula site just below Canyon Falls on Kenny Lake about 2, then wade fished for northerns at the underwater rock ledge just below Kennybas Falls (That is a subject all on its own).
Never saw another crew the entire loop from Kawnipi to Kenny.

Was in Mack for 3 nights a few years ago. If memory is right, southwest and western shorelines were quite burned. Campsites were ok, but nothing to write home about. Fishing for walleyes and smallmouth was exceptional. Smallies were especially good....almost all were 18-20 inch and seemed to be everywhere. My solo loop started in Saganagons to Mack through Kawnipi and McEwen and back through Falls Chain.
